Unatended Duties.

A rare moment of tranquility came over me, with last night's takedown, all of the leads I had were followed through and tied up. It's not like I would get into problems if I took it upon myself to roam further around and hunt them down like some Hunting dog.

I shook my head, I'm not some vigilante or action hero. I was pushing it far already when everybody was looking at me with disgust.

I had to keep on living, and that meant I had to catch up on a considerable amount of sleep. I had trouble staying awake, my eyes grew considerably heavier each time I leaned back or closed my eyes to blink.

It was tempting though to leave Sinne to the Doctors and head home and catch up, but she wouldn't forgive me for that. And I couldn't blame her, I wouldn't appreciate either to get pawned off like a stray dog.

Yet we remained seated well after class, half an hour might have passed when I stood up.

"You're with me?" Watching Sinne shove her materials into her backpack.

I myself had no idea where we would go, the building remained open for the public. So I could have well stayed here as long as I liked, but some groups might have used these halls here for some kind of event. It would have made it awkward if we lingered around that long.

We strolled around as I pondered what to do, normally I plan my days in advance, but I got lucky with last night, I thought she was way harder to track down, with an entire cityscape of its own down there.

"We're on duty today, you think that you can pull your weight?" Sinne asked after she hurried her steps to look at me.

The World faded to black, it became oppressively quiet, the darkness swallowed me whole like I could never escape again, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before a shining bright world came back into view.

"You forgot?"

"It's not like I've forgotten."

"..." Sinne's stares burned on my skin, it felt considerably warmer.

"I never had time to look it up with my schedule, and I can't just abandon the chase halfway through!"

She sighed and took out her phone and showed me her recent chat history with Ibuki.

Ibuki -Hey Sinne! Could you get Kyle ASAP on his phone? He didn't confirm if he'll lead the maintenance team today.

Ibuki -Hey Checking in again, is he doing alright or did he collapse somewhere again? Please make sure and tell him to turn his phone again. I need to know before I get Sina out of reserve and designate her as the leader for today.

You -He looks really sleepy and didn't even check his phone today, should I just tell him that he needs to talk to you or is it enough if he turns on his phone again?

Ibuki- Splending! Make sure that he turns it on at his next convenience.

I've considered telling Sinne that at my convenience is polite, right about now. But she'll get the hang of it if she advances to tenth-grade politics. Maybe…

I felt another part of my soul leaving me with the longest sight I had today, just like I was feeling more and more like a lifeless body, so are the grey and white halls of most government sector buildings.

We came past a blackboard with Posters and letters from the three different enforcers of the Directorate. It's a three-headed hydra of Comisariats.

Yet there was nothing out of the ordinary. As usual, there are the reports on the nightmare threat and their containment efforts. Job offerings off-world, with colonization fleets as well as on the off worlds Habitats.

And the last poster, the air felt heavy in my throat.

"DEIMOS, sign them up now. It's too late to reach your full potential and serve the Directorate to your utmost, but not for your Child! Under our tutelage, we unlock their full potential!"

I felt dizzy.

"Kyle, I can partake without you if you feel unwell, You'll just have to sign a waiver!"

As usual I would reach out to pat her head but I misjudged where she stood. It was unbecoming of me to miss non moving targets. "I've handled worse, thanks for your concern Sinne."

Despite my reassurance. She did not convinced.
