The folder Eudora had given were documents concerning the house. Everything had been moved to my name, I was free to do whatever I wanted with it. It was Mama's 'gift'.
Aunt Dara sat by me as I cried my eyes out over the documents, wet patches decorating the fine pieces of paper.
It was all too much.
"Should we drop by the weekend? It's been years since you've been there"
She suggested and I agreed. My heart squeezed and hurt at the thought of going back to the beginning of everything.
Dreadfully, the weekend quickly came. Aunt Dara and I were walking down a familiar root. My vision blurred as we entered my home's street.
The house looked dead. The flowers Mama loved to keep had been overrun by weeds and rodents. We pushed past the gate and made our way over. I placed my palm against the door and muttered the words I've never used in years.
My hand pulsed against the flat of concrete, and as if the house were a being, it began to come to life. The once dull demeanor became vibrant, the house regained it's lustre.
I pushed past the door, tears wetting my cheeks. Memories overwhelmed me as I took in the dusty and faded scent of home.
"Well this is gonna need a lot of work!" Aunt Dara huffed trying to lighten the dreary mood, I forced a chuckle not wanting to make her feel down as well, Mama was her sister as well.
"Yeah I guess"
"I'll start with the garden, you can...you know take your time"
I nodded at her. I made my way to my room. It hadn't changed, well except for the pictures on the walls, They stopped right on my 16th birthday, the sheets were a bit dusty but that was it.
I smiled and trudged to Mama and Dad's room.
It was dimly lit, the heavy curtains blocking out almost all the sunlight. I shook my head and went back out tripping over a blob. It had something in its hand.
It glanced up at me. Squealed and took the color of my hair before beginning to bounce around wildly
"What the- hey calm down!"
It dropped what it was holding and disappeared into the floor. It was a book. No it was a journal.
The one Dad had given me and the one mother took from me.
