Chapter : Hesitant to Leave

The Blood Moon bathed the Castellan stronghold in a surreal, crimson glow, its eerie light bleeding through the high arching windows of the Alpha King's chambers.

Rain Silvano stood at the edge of the room, his silver eyes fixed on the vast horizon visible from the balcony. His hands rested on the cold stone rail, but his grip was tight enough to crack stone.

Below, the sprawling lands of Nathaniel's empire stretched endlessly. A symbol of power.

A fortress built on blood and conquest. Rain loathed it, yet something about the view was hypnotic. It was a stark reminder of his current reality—captured, marked, and bound to the man he despised most.

Behind him, Nathaniel Castellan's presence loomed like a second shadow. He stood by the massive oak desk, sorting through letters and maps as if he weren't the orchestrator of Rain's torment.

The calm precision with which he moved set Rain's nerves ablaze.

How could someone who wielded such merciless power appear so composed?

"You've been silent for hours." Nathaniel's deep voice cut through the tense quiet, his words deliberate, his tone far too controlled.

Rain didn't turn around. He refused to look at the man who had claimed him in every way that mattered. "What's there to say? You've made your point, Alpha King."

Nathaniel's lips curved into a faint smirk. "You're still defiant. Good."

The faint sound of footsteps brought Rain to full attention. He turned sharply, his silver gaze locking onto Nathaniel's dark amber eyes. "What do you want from me?"

Nathaniel stepped closer, his movements predatory. The distance between them dissolved with each deliberate step.

Rain hated how the bond made him acutely aware of every detail—the Alpha King's scent, the way his chest rose and fell, and the latent power that crackled beneath his skin.

Nathaniel came to a stop mere feet away, his gaze piercing. "I've already told you. I want your loyalty."

Rain's laugh was bitter, sharp. "Loyalty? You think chaining me to your empire and branding me with this"—he thrust his wrist forward, the faint glow of the mating mark still visible—"will make me fall in line? You're more delusional than I thought."

Nathaniel's smirk didn't falter, but his eyes darkened, the amber in them glowing faintly. "No. I don't expect you to fall in line, Rain. That would be boring."

The words sent a shiver down Rain's spine, though he hid it well. "Then what do you want, Nathaniel? Because I'll tell you this—I'm not yours. Mark or not."

Nathaniel's smirk faded, replaced by something more dangerous—a look that made Rain's pulse quicken. "You don't understand yet, but you will."

Before Rain could respond, Nathaniel turned and strode to the desk, lifting one of the scrolls he'd been reading earlier. "The Blood Moon is rising to its peak. Do you feel it, Rain? That power coursing through your veins?"

Rain clenched his jaw. He felt it, all right. The Blood Moon amplified every sensation, every emotion.

And the mating bond only made it worse. His instincts warred with his mind, the pull toward Nathaniel growing stronger with every passing moment.

"Whatever you're planning, it won't work," Rain snapped.

Nathaniel turned back to him, his expression unreadable. "It's not about plans, Rain. It's about survival. The Blood Moon changes everything, and you'd do well to remember that."

Before Rain could press him further, the door to the chamber opened, and a young wolf entered, bowing respectfully to Nathaniel. "My King, the council has gathered. They're awaiting your presence."

Nathaniel nodded, his gaze lingering on Rain for a moment longer. "Stay here. I won't be long."

Rain bristled. "I'm not your prisoner anymore."

Nathaniel's smirk returned, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. "No, you're not. But you are mine."

The door shut behind him, leaving Rain alone with his simmering rage.

The minutes stretched into an hour. Rain paced the room like a caged animal, the weight of Nathaniel's words gnawing at him.

The bond between them was growing stronger, no matter how much he tried to resist it. Every time Nathaniel was near, it was as if his wolf recognized something Rain's mind refused to accept.

His wolf wanted Nathaniel.

Rain growled, shaking his head. No. He wouldn't give in. He couldn't.

A sudden sound pulled him from his thoughts—a faint scraping, like claws against stone. His instincts flared, and he spun toward the balcony.

The crimson light of the Blood Moon bathed the figure emerging from the shadows, its movements swift and calculated.

"Soren," Rain breathed, relief flooding his chest as his beta stepped into view.

Soren's expression was tense, his eyes scanning the chamber quickly. "We don't have much time."

Rain moved toward him, his heart pounding. "You shouldn't be here. If Nathaniel finds out—"

"I don't care," Soren interrupted, his voice low but firm. "I'm not leaving you here to rot."

Rain's resolve faltered for a moment. He wanted to leave, to escape this place and the torment of the bond.

But something held him back—a gnawing feeling that leaving now would only make things worse.

"Soren," Rain began, his voice hesitant. "I... I can't leave. Not yet."

Soren's eyes widened, disbelief etched across his face. "What are you talking about? This isn't you, Rain. He's—"

"I know what he is!" Rain snapped, his voice rising. He took a steadying breath, lowering his tone. "But there's something bigger at play here. The Blood Moon... the bond. I need to understand it before we make our next move."

Soren's gaze softened, but his frustration was clear. "You're risking everything by staying here."

Rain met his beta's eyes, a flicker of determination sparking within him. "Then I'll risk it. Because if we don't figure this out, it won't just be me who pays the price—it'll be all of us."

The Blood Moon hung heavy above them, its crimson light a constant reminder of the power that bound them all.

And as the night deepened, Rain knew that his choices would shape not only his fate but the fate of everyone he cared about.

The storm was only just beginning.
