Chapter 6: A Magical Beginning, A Love Awakened

Gabu's Diary Entry:

Today feels like a blur of emotions, like my heart's been run over by a freight train, backed up, and hit again for good measure. I don't even know how to process everything that happened, but here I am, trying to put it into words before my brain explodes. Maybe writing it down will help me sort through the chaos.

It started innocently enough. I'd finally managed to push the memory of Rei reading my diary to the back of my mind, or at least I was trying. School was as mundane as ever, and I thought I might actually get through a day without Rei's usual teasing antics.

But of course, peace and quiet don't last long when Rei's around.

I was halfway through doodling in my notebook during history class when my phone buzzed. Glancing at the screen, I saw her name pop up. My heart immediately did that annoying flutter thing it's been doing lately, and I had to force myself not to react too obviously.

The message was simple but ominous:

"Meet me at the park tonight. Don't be late. Bring your diary."

My heart sank. Bring my diary? Again? What on earth did she want now? Hadn't I already suffered enough humiliation from her knowing all my secrets? My stomach churned with anxiety, but a tiny spark of curiosity kept me from outright refusing.

The rest of the school day dragged on painfully slowly. I couldn't focus on anything, my thoughts spinning wildly with every worst-case scenario imaginable. What if she wanted to tease me again? What if she planned to read more of my entries aloud? Or worse, what if she showed someone else?

But then again, why would she text me privately if that was her intention? Rei was unpredictable, yes, but she wasn't cruel… I think.

By the time the sun had set, I found myself walking to the park, clutching my diary tightly against my chest. The cool evening air nipped at my skin, but I barely felt it over the pounding of my heart.

When I arrived, I spotted her immediately. She was sitting on the swings, her figure bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. For a moment, I just stood there, watching her. She looked so at ease, gently rocking back and forth, as if the entire universe wasn't hanging in the balance of whatever she was about to say.

Rei noticed me before I could gather my thoughts. She looked up, her expression brightening into a smile that made my stomach do an embarrassing flip.

"You came," she said casually, as if it wasn't a big deal.

"I didn't exactly have a choice," I muttered, trying to sound annoyed but failing miserably. My voice came out quieter than I intended, betraying just how nervous I really was.

Rei smirked and gestured for me to sit on the swing next to hers. I hesitated for a moment before giving in and plopping down beside her, still clutching my diary like a lifeline.

"So," I said, breaking the silence. "What's this about? Why did you ask me to bring my diary?"

Rei leaned forward slightly, her elbows resting on her knees. She looked at me with that unreadable expression of hers, the one that always made me feel like she could see right through me.

"I want to write something in it," she said simply.

My jaw dropped. "You… what?"

"You heard me," she said, her tone light but serious at the same time. "I want to add a page to your diary."

Her words hung in the air, and for a moment, I was sure I had misheard her. Why would Rei, of all people, want to write in my diary? It didn't make any sense.

"Why?" I asked cautiously, my voice barely above a whisper.

Rei shrugged, her gaze shifting to the ground. "Because… I want to make up for reading it without your permission. And because…" She trailed off, her cheeks faintly pink in the dim light.

My heart skipped a beat. Was Rei actually blushing? That was new.

"Because what?" I pressed, unable to hide my curiosity.

She glanced at me, her eyes soft but filled with something I couldn't quite decipher. "Because I think your diary deserves more than just wishes. It deserves moments that are real."

I blinked, completely caught off guard. My throat tightened as I tried to process what she was saying.

Before I could respond, Rei reached out her hand. "Can I see it?"

I hesitated, my grip on the diary tightening. Handing over my most private thoughts to Rei once was already more than I could handle. Doing it a second time? The idea was terrifying. But something about the way she looked at me—so sincere, so uncharacteristically gentle—made me loosen my hold.

With trembling hands, I passed the diary to her. Rei opened it carefully, flipping through the pages until she found a blank one. She pulled out a pen from her pocket and began writing.

I watched in silence, my curiosity warring with my anxiety. What was she writing? Was it another tease, or was it something more?

When she finally finished, Rei closed the diary and handed it back to me.

"Don't read it until you're home," she said, her voice soft.

I stared at her, my chest tight with a mix of emotions. "Why not?"

Rei smirked, the teasing glint back in her eyes. "Because I want you to think about it first. Build up the suspense, you know?"

I groaned, rolling my eyes. "You're impossible."

"And yet, here you are," she said with a grin.

The tension between us softened, and for a moment, the world felt still. Rei leaned back on the swing, tilting her head to look up at the stars.

"You know," she said, her tone thoughtful, "you're braver than you think, Gabu."

I blinked, taken aback. "What do you mean?"

Rei turned to me, her gaze steady. "Writing down your dreams, putting your feelings out there, even if it's just on paper—it takes guts. Most people are too scared to even admit what they want."

Her words hit me harder than I expected. I looked down at the diary in my hands, my heart swelling with a strange mix of pride and vulnerability.

"Thanks… I guess," I said, my voice barely audible.

Rei smiled, and for a moment, everything felt okay.

When it was time to leave, I stood up reluctantly, clutching the diary like it was a treasure chest. Rei walked me to the park's edge, her hands casually tucked into her pockets.

"Goodnight, Gabu," she said softly, her voice carrying a warmth that made my chest ache.

"Goodnight," I whispered back, my cheeks burning.

As I walked home, the anticipation of reading what Rei had written in my diary consumed me. The second I stepped into my room, I flipped to the page she had written on, my hands trembling.

Her words were simple but powerful:

"Dreams aren't meant to stay on paper. Let's make them real together."

And beneath that, she had signed her name with a small doodle of a star.

I stared at the page, my heart pounding in my chest. What did she mean by that? Was it a promise? A confession? Or just another one of her enigmatic riddles?

Gabu's Diary Entry (Post-Script):

Rei is going to be the death of me. But maybe—just maybe—I wouldn't have it any other way.
