Give up

Zephyrine POV

Coming back to this house again was like a nightmare. I breathed in deeply looking at the house that once held pleasant memories. The vivid image of Michael's smile still display in my head, how he rubbed my tummy making imaginations like I was pregnant, how he carried me around the house saying he doesn't want his wife to look old doing chores, we eat our most of the time and on most occasions he surprises me with flowers and beautiful jewelries. Those beautiful memories lingered in my memories. So, sad it all ended after a year, the night I told him the secret of my beauty soap. He made me put my company in his name and changed towards me afterward, I became a wife begging to be loved by her husband. He comes home late, smelling of different women.

I never received flowers again, neither did I receive those sweet morning kisses he always showered on me two years ago. Everything ended, and my love chapter was closed. I walked inside the mansion a bit startled at the sight before me. Olive sat on his laps, while he sang a lullaby to make her sleep, it should look romantic, but it felt disgusting to me. I ignored them walking past him, and he stopped me.

"Your things are no longer in the room, I thought of throwing them out but realized you might become homeless without them. So I had the maids move them to the store." The word came out of his mouth like he did me a favor.

"Why-

"Shush," He caught me off, glaring dangerously at me.

"I'm certain you aren't blind to see that I'm trying to get someone to sleep here. Just keep shut and walk to the store, take your things and leave." His words were like droplets of ice, piercing my skin hard. I felt vulnerable, and his words shattered me, he gazed at me with a bulging stare, his expression twisted in disgust, as if I repulsed him.

I said nothing, taking my lips in. I still have to be in time for my brother's final trial today and I want to see my mother and have a word with the doctor so that her surgery will begin. I took a turn to the left, going to the store. It was hard pushing the door open, and it almost fell on me making a creaking sound. I quickly caught the door my heart racing in my chest. I carefully raised it back up, moving it to the other side. The inside was stuffy, with cobwebs all over. My things laid there on the dusty floor, scattered. I had to tie a cloth round my nose to avoid inhaling the dust. The place was dark, so I had to turn on my phone to illuminate the room.

I quickly began to pack the clothes from the floor dusting them carefully before putting them in the bag.

"Shit," I muttered as the alarm on my phone rang out loudly. It was time for my brother's final trial, and I was not near to finish packing the clothes. I went online and started watching the case on my phone while I arrange the clothes and shoes in the bag.

"This court….."

I stopped cleaning the shoe in my hand giving my full attention to the judge's words.

"Hereby, finds the accused, guilty and is charged imprisonment of a lifetime." My world crumbled before me, time seemed to stop as the glass shoe on my hand slipped off falling onto the ground and shattering into pieces. My phone rang and seeing the caller gave me a heart attack for a minute. I managed to recover, picking the call.

"Mrs. Michael. We are heartbroken to inform you that your mother just passed away. We will need you to come and sign some papers, once again, we are sorry for your loss." A female voice said, it was obvious it was a call from the hospital my mother was admitted to.

I could not breathe, my hand trembled and the sound of my phone hitting the ground brought me back to reality. I gasped staring at my wedding shoe on the ground. My mother bought it for me, saying I always wish to be like Cinderella and bragged about my prince charming taking me away. Now she was no more, tears trailed down my eyes, I lose everything in the name of love.

I turned behind me to see the door closing. It was impossible to push it open from the inside, worse still if it gets jammed there's no way out unless someone from outside opens it. I saw the fingers of the person closing the door, it was obviously a female, her long painted nails held a small bottle, throwing it into the room. I didn't realize the jade pendent falling of as I ran to the door. But before I got there, it was jammed.

I hit it repeatedly screaming loudly. "Open up, someone is inside." My throat suddenly became itchy, and I began to cough, my eyes became blurry and breathing became difficult. The bottle she threw inside must've been a gas or something. Is she trying to kill me?

"Olive, food is ready." I heard Michael's loud voice from the sitting room. "Is the bitch gone?" I hear him ask, I wanted to scream but could not find my voice again. I was getting weak by the minute, my body lay limp on the floor, refusing to obey my brain desperate command to rise. My chest heaved with labored breaths, each inhale a struggle. I panic, am I going to die here? No, this can't be my end. I thought as I dragged my still body on the ground towards the door. With a frail arm, I raised my fist, but it trembled, hovering inches from the door. Each strike, a feeble tap, drained of energy.

"Don't worry, she is gone. Gone forever." I heard Olive's voice behind the door, as she departed.

My eyelids grew heavy, and the world around me dissolved in darkness. The prince charming I'd always dreamed of wasn't coming to save me. My thoughts unraveled, consumed by the darkness that had haunted me for so long. Everyone has left me? What was the point of fighting anymore? I let go, surrendering to the void.

My eyes lazily narrowed to the pendent that had fallen, a teardrop fell on it and the last thing I saw was a blinding light from the pendent, like a final burst of hope. And then, nothing.
