The Raincaller’s

He leaned out of the hollow, squinting through the endless rain. Shadows shifted and swayed among the towering trees, the dim light casting eerie shapes across the forest. He couldn't see the source of the sound, but the oppressive weight of being watched settled on him like a lead blanket.

His mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. "Great," he muttered under his breath. "This can only end well."

As he sat back, heart pounding, a faint vibration began to hum through the tree. It was subtle at first, almost like a trick of the imagination. But it grew steadily, resonating through the hollow and into his chest.

And then he saw it.

The sound came again, closer this time—a low, guttural roar that made Óttarr's chest vibrate. It wasn't just a sound; it was a force, rolling through the forest like a wave, silencing the patter of rain for an instant. He pressed his back against the damp wall of the hollow, his breath quickening. His heart pounded in his ears, competing with the storm outside.

And then, through the relentless rain and mist, he saw movement.

The nest wasn't just a hollow in a tree. As his eyes adjusted to the dim glow of the bioluminescent fungi, the intricate, living structure became unnervingly clear. Vines and branches were woven together like muscle and sinew, pulsing faintly with a light that felt almost... sentient. The hum that had been haunting him since his arrival grew louder, vibrating in his chest and rattling his teeth.

Óttarr's gaze darted toward the forest floor. Shadows shifted among the towering roots and gnarled trunks, too large and deliberate to be mere tricks of light. The rain seemed to part for it, pooling in cascading rivulets as something enormous moved through the mist.

Then it emerged.

The creature stepped onto the nest with the quiet power of a storm building in the distance. It was unlike anything Óttarr had ever seen—or imagined in his wildest nightmares. Its body was feline in shape but impossibly massive, its moss-covered fur streaked with glowing veins that pulsed like a heartbeat. Rain slid off its coat in shimmering streams, catching the light in a way that made it look almost liquid.

Its head tilted toward him, and Óttarr's breath froze. The creature's sharp, birdlike beak gleamed like polished wood, vines and fungi winding around its edges. Two piercing green eyes locked onto him, glowing with a savage, intelligent light. They weren't the eyes of a mindless predator. No, these eyes saw him. They judged him.

Óttarr flattened himself against the tree, instinct screaming at him to run, but his legs refused to move. The Raincaller's gaze bore into him, a suffocating pressure that made his chest tighten. Its massive wings unfurled with a slow, deliberate motion, each feather gleaming with iridescent blues and greens. Rainwater poured from the wings in sheets, the sound almost deafening as the storm seemed to redouble its efforts.

The nest trembled beneath its weight, the glowing fungi flickering like a warning. The Raincaller took a step forward, claws digging into the woven structure with a sickening crunch. It tilted its head again, the glowing patterns on its body rippling in waves, as if speaking a language Óttarr couldn't hope to understand.

And then, with terrifying grace, it crouched.

Óttarr's heart stopped.

In one explosive movement, the creature leapt into the air, its wings snapping open with a thunderous crack. The force of the jump shook the nest, nearly toppling Óttarr out of his precarious perch. He grabbed onto the edge, his fingers digging into the slick bark as the Raincaller soared upward, vanishing into the canopy like a living shadow.

The storm filled the silence it left behind, but Óttarr couldn't move. His body trembled, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The Raincaller was gone—for now—but he could still feel the weight of its gaze, still hear the deafening hum in his ears.

Whatever that thing was, it wasn't just a part of the forest. It was the forest.

And it had let him livE
