The engine of Liam's car roared to life, but the man who had stepped from the blocking vehicle raised his hand, signaling for them to stop. Elena's heart pounded in her chest as Liam's fingers tightened around the steering wheel, his gaze locked on the stranger in front of them.
"Get out of the car," the man repeated, his voice cold and commanding, but there was something familiar about it.
Liam glanced at Elena, his face hard as steel. "Stay in the car," he warned her, voice low.
Elena didn't move, her eyes flicking between Liam and the man. "Who is he?" she whispered.
Liam's jaw tightened. "I'll handle this. Stay down."
Reluctantly, Elena sank lower into her seat, her hands trembling as she tried to make herself as invisible as possible. Through the darkened window, she could just make out the outline of the man—tall, imposing, dressed in black. His face was hidden in shadow, but his presence was enough to make her stomach churn.
Liam opened the door, stepping out of the car, and Elena could hear the low murmur of their conversation as she tried to listen.
"Liam," the man said, his voice sharp and full of disdain, "you've put yourself in a dangerous position. And now, you're bringing her into it?"
Liam's voice remained steady but tight. "I didn't have a choice. She's not leaving. Not now."
The man scoffed. "You're a fool. She's the key to everything—and you're playing into their hands by protecting her."
Elena's breath hitched. The key to everything? She had no idea what that meant, but it sounded like they were discussing more than just her safety.
"You don't know what you're dealing with," the man continued, his tone darkening. "You're in over your head, Liam. The moment you chose to bring her into this world, you sealed both your fates."
Liam didn't respond right away, and for a moment, it seemed like the two men were locked in a silent battle of wills. Elena's heart raced as she strained to hear more, but the distance between them made it difficult to make out any details.
Finally, the man stepped back, his gaze flicking briefly toward the car where Elena remained hidden.
"If you think you can protect her from what's coming, you're even more naïve than I thought," he said, his voice laced with venom. "There's nowhere left to hide, Liam."
With that, he turned on his heel and walked back to his car, leaving Liam standing alone in the street.
Liam didn't immediately return to the car. Instead, he stood motionless for a few moments, staring after the man. Elena could see the tension in his posture, the weight of the situation pressing down on him.
When he finally returned to the driver's seat, he didn't speak right away. He started the engine, the low rumble filling the silence.
Elena couldn't hold it in any longer. "Who was that? And what did he mean—'the key to everything'?"
Liam's eyes flicked to her, but he didn't meet her gaze for long. "Someone I used to trust," he muttered. "Someone who's now working with the people who want you gone."
Elena's breath caught in her throat. "And why does he say I'm the key?"
Liam didn't answer right away. Instead, he took a deep breath, his hands gripping the wheel as they drove deeper into the night. "Because you're not just the bride in a contract. You're tied to something far bigger than any of us."
Elena's mind raced, the pieces of the puzzle not quite fitting together. "Tied to what? What's going on, Liam?"
But he didn't answer, his face a mask of determination and restraint. The weight of everything was pressing on him, and Elena could see the cracks starting to show.
Cliffhanger
The car rounded a corner, and suddenly, the headlights of multiple vehicles appeared in the distance. The road ahead was blocked—dozens of black SUVs lining the street.
Liam's eyes narrowed, and his grip tightened on the wheel. "It's a trap."
He swerved the car sharply, heading for an alleyway. The sound of engines revving grew louder behind them, the trap closing in.
And then, a voice came through the car's radio.
"Liam Astor. You've made a grave mistake."
