Chapter 14: The Escape

The sound of the car engine grew louder, closer. Elena's heart skipped a beat. Sophie moved swiftly to the door, her eyes scanning the street outside. Liam was already by her side, his hand resting on the grip of his gun.

"We don't have much time," Sophie muttered, looking over her shoulder at Elena. "Get to the back room. Now."

Without thinking, Elena moved, her feet carrying her into the narrow hallway of the safe house. Liam and Sophie were right behind her, their footsteps quick and purposeful. She had no idea what was going on, but one thing was certain: they were in danger.

They reached a small, windowless room at the back of the building. Sophie quickly locked the door behind them, her fingers working with practiced speed.

Liam stood by the window, his eyes narrowed as he peered outside. "They're here," he said, his voice steady but urgent.

Elena's breath hitched. "Who are they?"

"They've been tracking us," Sophie answered, her voice grim. "And they're not just here for you anymore. They've figured out that I'm involved too."

Elena swallowed, her throat dry. She didn't understand what was happening. One moment, she was just trying to live a normal life, and now? Now she was caught in something bigger than she could ever imagine.

Sophie moved quickly, pulling a small duffel bag from beneath the table. "We're leaving. Now."

Liam turned to Elena, his eyes intense. "Stay close to me. Do exactly as I say."

He didn't need to say it twice. Elena was already shaking, her body trembling with a mix of fear and adrenaline. She didn't know if she could trust anyone, but she had no choice. They were her only chance.

Sophie opened the back door, checking the alley outside before motioning for them to follow. "This way," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The alley was dark and empty, the streetlights casting long shadows across the pavement. Elena could hear her own breath in her ears, the fear rising like a tidal wave.

Liam and Sophie led the way, moving with the precision of soldiers on a mission. They turned a corner, and Elena almost stumbled in the darkness, but Liam's hand was there, steadying her.

"Keep moving," he urged quietly. "Stay sharp."

Elena nodded, doing her best to keep up. Every step felt heavier, the weight of the situation bearing down on her. Her mind raced with questions. What did Sophie mean when she said the people after them weren't just coming for her anymore?

They reached another alley, this one even more deserted. Sophie stopped for a moment, pulling out a small device from her pocket. She pressed a few buttons, and a soft beep echoed in the silence.

"They're still following us," Sophie said, her face tightening. "We need to get to the underground tunnels before they catch up."

Elena's head spun. "Underground tunnels? What's going on?"

"We'll explain later," Liam said, his voice clipped. "Right now, we need to focus on getting you out of here."

Before Elena could respond, a distant sound reached her ears. A car, coming closer.

"They're getting closer," Sophie said, her voice low. "We don't have much time."

Liam looked down at Elena, his eyes intense. "Stay here. I'll take care of them."

"What?" Elena's voice rose in panic. "No, Liam, don't—"

But he was already moving, disappearing into the shadows.

Sophie grabbed Elena's arm. "We don't have time to argue. Move."

Elena was yanked forward, her legs moving faster than she thought possible. She glanced back just in time to see Liam vanish around the corner.

They continued down the alley, Sophie guiding Elena with determination. But the closer they got to the entrance of the tunnels, the more Elena's fear grew. What if Liam didn't come back?

Finally, they reached a small, inconspicuous door hidden behind a stack of crates. Sophie pulled it open, and a faint, musty smell wafted out from the darkness beyond.

"After you," Sophie said, motioning for Elena to enter.

Elena hesitated, but the sound of a car engine growing louder in the distance pushed her forward. She stepped into the darkness, her hand gripping the cold metal railing as she descended into the unknown.

Sophie followed closely behind, closing the door quietly behind her. They moved through the tunnels in silence, the only sound the faint echoes of their footsteps against the stone walls.

Elena's mind was spinning with the weight of everything she had just learned. The power inside her. The people after her. Liam and Sophie, who were both so determined to protect her, yet had secrets of their own.

But it wasn't just the people chasing them that worried her now—it was the sense of betrayal gnawing at her. She still didn't know who to trust.

"What happens now?" Elena finally asked, her voice shaking.

Sophie didn't answer immediately. She looked ahead, her eyes scanning the dark tunnels. "We wait. We regroup. And we prepare for what's coming."

Liam's voice echoed from behind them, distant but unmistakable.

"Get to the safe house. I'll be right behind you."

Cliffhanger

But as they turned to head deeper into the tunnels, the sound of footsteps grew louder from the other end—someone was coming. Someone who wasn't Liam.
