Chapter 8

Clyde's words brought sudden clarity to the situation. Such manipulative tactics were not uncommon among affluent families.

I had been wary of Betty's unexpected appearance in Clyde's life from the start—it seemed contrived, as if her entire presence had been orchestrated. This suspicion drove me to stand by Clyde, supporting him for a decade.

However, the man before me now was a mere shell of the person I had once loved. My faith in him had long since vanished, and I was determined never to assist him again.

I met Clyde's desperate look with a firm shake of my head.

"No matter how dire your circumstances or what difficulties you face, I can no longer involve myself in your affairs."

Clyde's face grew more anxious, his eyes imploring.

"Angela, I'm not asking you to help me regain my position at York's company," he said, his voice unsteady. "I genuinely want to apologize. If you can forgive me... allow me to remain by your side. I beg you."
