Chapter 3

I inclined my head slightly. "You're correct."

Noticing my seeming concurrence, my closest companion's mouth formed a covert grin.

"Arabella, you truly embody the woman Axel treasured above all else," she remarked, her voice tinged with feigned reverence.

"If he were aware of your dedication to him, he'd be overwhelmed with emotion."

Her statement appeared genuine, but I detected the sarcasm in her smile. I chuckled quietly as well.

She laughed at what she perceived as my gullibility. I laughed at her misplaced confidence.

Following my refusal of Aunt Vivienne's matchmaking attempt, my best friend swiftly circulated her rendition of events among our neighbors.

"Arabella has resolved to remain unmarried for the rest of her days," she declared assuredly.

"It's futile to introduce potential suitors to her. She's burdened with millions in debt. Anyone wishing to be with her must first assist in clearing her debts to demonstrate their commitment."

Her deliberately exaggerated and strategically shared words quickly transformed the neighborhood into a hub of speculation.

"This Arabella is so foolish! How does she expect to clear such enormous debt by herself?"

"Indeed! She's a widowed mother. Why push herself to such extremes?"

"She's clearly lost her senses. Her husband's passing must have affected her mental state."

I disregarded their murmurs, concentrating instead on what was truly important—my child and the formidable debt I was determined to overcome. I labored relentlessly, balancing multiple jobs and responsibilities, while gradually repairing the extensive damage to Axel's business.

As time passed, my son grew taller and more self-reliant. However, my best friend became increasingly audacious.

Initially, she would visit solely to see my son. Now, she frequently took him away for entire evenings.

I understood her motives. She was facilitating reunions between him and Axel's relatives.

My son, too young to grasp the implications, was thrilled. He eagerly anticipated her visits, especially during holidays when she promised to take him on outings.

Her demeanor towards me also shifted. Her once-hidden contempt now showed plainly in her gaze.

Then came my son's birthday celebration.

Early that day, my best friend arrived bearing a cake and presents. Her enthusiasm was evident, her actions overwhelming.

After the meal, my best friend eagerly turned to my son with a bright expression.

"Rowan, share your wish with your godmother. I'll do everything in my power to make it a reality!"

My son paused momentarily, glancing at me for approval before answering, "I hope our family's debt can be cleared quickly."

His response caused my best friend's eyes to gleam with understanding. She faced me with a solemn look.

"Arabella, observe how considerate Rowan is. Even his wish concerns the family's financial situation."

"You've been working tirelessly for years. How are things progressing?"

Their expectant gazes fixed on me, and I offered a subtle smile.

"It won't be long," I replied calmly.

"Axel's company is operational again. Once it's fully recovered, not only will the debt be settled, but the business might even experience a remarkable resurgence."

Upon hearing this, both of them erupted in laughter, their relief evident.

My best friend turned to my son, her tone brimming with encouragement.

"Rowan, you should also apply yourself diligently to your studies. When the company thrives, you can assist your mother in managing it."

Rowan nodded eagerly, his eyes shining with resolve.

My best friend then redirected her attention to me, her voice soft and filled with pretend concern.

"Arabella, you've endured so much over the years. You truly deserve some happiness."

"Rowan is such an intelligent and promising child. When he grows up, he'll be incredibly devoted to you."

"Your good fortune is imminent!"

She appeared so proud, so satisfied, as if she were somehow part of the anticipated success.

I returned her smile, though my thoughts were mixed.

My best friend, you believe you're fortunate. But it is I who has luck on my side.

As the company regained its stability, collaborations flourished. Orders poured in, and the market value skyrocketed.

Before long, I had cleared every last penny of the debt.

And the company? It didn't merely recover—it expanded exponentially, becoming more extensive and prosperous than ever before.
