Selene's pov~
The murmurs erupted again not long after Mr Evans exited the room but this time, louder.
"Selene. What was that about?" Sophia, whose desk was right next to mine asked.
I shrugged, as I also didn't know what it was about. I was as confused as any of them. The topic had gone from Ian and Cassie's entrance to my interaction with Mr Evans and from the looks of it, Cassie was not happy with the way things developed. I caught her annoyed side glances at me and I felt a little pleased with myself.
I had been very sad when she didn't say a word to me after all that had happened but now, I felt nothing but hatred towards her.
"Can we talk?" I was pulled from my thoughts as I looked up to find Ian standing beside my desk. He had a slightly annoyed look but I wasn't interested in hearing what he had to say.
"I don't want to talk to you." I turned my gaze towards my screen.
"Get up, Selene." It sounded low and menacing, almost like a threat.
"Or what?" I crossed my arms and looked right at me.
Ian never physically abused me during our relationship except for that one time, so I was 99% sure he wouldn't use force on me. I saw him get angrier by the second but I didn't care. I was not going to hear whatev he had to say, I couldn't, I was scared I would break down in front of him and ask him why he chose to betray me in the way he did.
I didn't want to do that, I didn't want to be that weak woman he thought I was. I kept my eyes on his hands, just in case he decided to slap me. His fists were clenched and he was obviously annoyed, but why?
"Just hear him out." Sophia said from behind me and I turned to give her a look.
"Miss Valentine, this does not concern you so I reckon you stay out of it," I spat and she turned her head away, mumbling sounds that seemed like curses at me.
I turned to look at Ian who was unrelenting, he didn't move an inch from where he was. I turned back to my screen to begin my work but was interrupted when Ian jolted me out of my seat and dragged me towards the exit.
"IAN, LET ME GO!" I screamed at him, trying to loosen his grip on my wrist. "YOU'RE HURTING ME!"
There were protests from my other coworkers and my team manager also came out of his office. Despite the protest, not one person left their seats to help me. Ian dragged me to the backdoor staircase and pushed me against the wall. I felt the impact and groaned loudly.
"What the hell, Ian?" I asked once I regained my composure.
"You were cheating on me, weren't you? You slut." He said menacingly.
"Wh...what?" I asked, confused.
"Mr Evans," he pointed towards the backdoor we came from, "What the hell was that all about? What was that about lunch? You were two timing me? Someone like you?"
He trapped me against the wall, his hands holding my shoulders, his fingers digging into my skin.
"Stop..." I pleaded, "You're hurting me, Ian."
"Does he know about your little problem? Do you think he would stick around if he knows? You're nothing but spoilt goods, you hear? Spoilt, good for nothing baggage." His voice was laced with venom and I felt my blood boil.
He was pinning me down so I couldn't move my arms so I used my knee to kick him in the shins, hard. He fell to the floor and groaned in pain.
"You bitch..." He cried out, cursing me.
"How did I ever love you?" I looked down at him and made my way back to the office. "Don't ever talk to me again." I said as I exited the staircase into the office.
I noticed everyone's eyes on me as I entered without Ian, there were subtle murmuring but nothing too loud and I wondered how they felt being onlookers, nothing but characters in the background.
They all knew Ian and I were dating, they saw Ian and Cassie come in together, holding hands so they were able to deduce that we broke up, yet, when Ian was manhandling me, not one of them stood up to come to my rescue.
I got to my seat and started drafting my transfer request.
"You want to leave?" Sophia said from beside me, "Why? Because of those two?"
"Why are you snooping around my screen, miss Valentine?" I asked, turning my gaze to meet hers.
"I think I deserve an apology, don't you?" She said brazenly, "I was just trying to help, and you did go with him in the end."
"Ha," I laughed, "I went with him?"
"I want an apology." She deadpanned.
"Then force one out of me." I turned my gaze back to my screen, "And stay out of my computer, Miss Valentine."
She scoffed and Cassie suddenly let out a scream. The same people who were rooted to the ground when I was dragged out rushed over to her side, out of concern, asking her what had happened.
" I can't find my engagement ring." She looked as if she was going to cry.
Engagement ring?
I turned to her and she looked like she was about to cry. I saw her look at me and I felt a shiver run down my spine. I quickly searched my drawers for any ring and in the third drawer, a ring that was both mine and not mine sat on top of my documents, as if asking to be found. I scoffed and took the ring, then went over to her desk.
"What do you mean by engagement ring?" I asked as soon as she was within my hearing range.
"Oh, Selene." Her voice was still as sweet as ever, it tugged on my heart and I felt like slapping her to get her out of her pretentious state. "Selene, it's horrible. The engagement ring Ian gave me is gone." She lunged towards me, enveloping me in a hug. My stomach dropped and I felt nauseated.
"He proposed to you?" I felt a lump in my throat as I said those words. I had begged Ian to propose to me, hinting at it and outright begging him but he never did, he always said he wasn't ready but he had already put an engagement ring on another woman's finger not even up to a week following our breakup. Even when Ian had proposed to me the month before, he had asked me to buy the ring. I swallowed the lump.
Cassie stepped away from me, her face masked with linnocence, "Are you angry?"
I felt judging looks from the people circled around her but I didn't care. I looked at her and smiled as genuinely as I could. "I'm happy for you. You got my leftovers."
Cassie's face got red with anger and Mr Morton, a middle aged colleague who was known in the office for having a crush on Cassie stepped forward and slapped me.
My cheeks burned and tingled but I didn't let it show in my expression.
"Shut up, bitch." He spat.
"You took her ring out of jealousy, didn't you?" Jessica, another colleague said.
Murmurs erupted from all ends of the room, as if agreeing that I had a reason to steal her engagement ring.
"I just found out about the engagement today. How could I have stolen it?" I asked her.
"Actually," Cassie was already in tears, "I'm sorry, Selene. I know you love Ian but I do too and he loves me. He just didn't want to be in an abusive relationship anymore."
I laughed dryly, amused by the lie she was telling. It might have been true that he loved her but I had never abused Ian, and she knew it.
"Let's check her desk." Someone said.
"Yeah, we won't tolerate stealing and bullying in this department." Another added.
It was natural that they believed her. Cassie and I had been best friends but while I was an introvert who only focused on my work, Cassie was an extrovert who won the hearts of our co-workers. So it was not surprising that they were siding with her. They quickly moved over to my desk, giving me the chance to slip the ring in Cassie's handbag on her desk.
I slipped away from her desk to mine, where everyone had gathered. I wondered if someone, the manager, was going to stop this but he just acted like nothing was happening.
"Why do you think I took it?" I said before anyone had the chance to ransack my drawers.
"You've always been jealous of Cassie, always copying her, always buying clothes similar to hers." Jessica ranted. "Of course you got jealous that the guy you were stalking actually fell in love with someone perfect for him."
I glanced at Cassie who was still shedding crocodile tears behind her and smirked.
"You're right. They are perfect for each other."
