Chapter 48: Infiltrating Onigashima

We had finally arrived in Wano, now our next objective would be finding Kaido's home base of Onigashima. We managed to make it to Aano by using Rei's ability. Unfortunately, her ability wouldn't help us to navigate while we were in Wano because she's never seen a map of the place.

We made landfall and made for the nearest town. The Land of Wano is cut off from the rest of the world, so we had to wear disguises while we were in town. We didn't stay long, just long enough to get what we needed, then we left and headed straight towards Onigashima.

"So, Leo. You said you said that you plan for infiltrating Onigashima and finding the Ponyglyph right?" Celeste asked.

"Yeah of course, I got a plan." I said but I didn't really have a plan. I was kind of hoping to just walk in and pick a fight with Kaido, but my crew definitely wouldn't have wanted me to do that. And to be honest it probably wasn't going to be a good idea to fight him. After all this wouldn't be like my duel against Whitebeard. There's a good chance that he would kill me if I lost. I'd probably be better to be safe than sorry.

In other words, I should probably come up with a plan to get the Ponyglyph without starting a fight. That being said, I didn't have any good ideas so I decided to just wing it.

"Listen I have a good plan." (I didn't.)

"It's better if you all stay here, it's easier to infiltrate with a smaller group. So just me and Yuma will go. Everyone else should stay on the ship a safe distance away." I said. I wanted just Yuma to come because I didn't want the rest of the crew to know that I didn't have a plan.

Me and Yuma boarded a small rowboat and made our way to the front gate and we approached the guard stationed there.

"Hey, who goes there?" The guard shouted. "Do you have business here? And if you so, have you made an appointment?"

"Of course we have, you fool!" I replied impatiently. "Do you think that we would just show up unannounced to one of the Four Emperors' doorstep and try to walk in the front door. What kind of idiot would do that?" I questioned while Yuma gave me a side eyed look.

"Yeah, that's a good point. Sorry about that. So what are you guys here for?" The guard asked.

"This guy is the fire inspector, he's here to check your smoke alarms." I said while pointing to Yuma.

"Oh that's good we've been expecting you." The guard replied.

"And I'm a local businessman and I have a meeting with Kaido scheduled."

"Eh, I don't think that the boss remembered he had a meeting. He's busy drinking right now. Maybe it'd be better if you come back another time." The guard said.

"Nonsense, it's better to discuss business over drinks anyway." I said confidently.

"Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you." The guard then lead me and Yuma inside. Yuma was about to walk around Onigashima to "inspect the smoke alarms" while I was going to head to wear Kaido was.

"Hey are you sure that we should be splitting up? Especially you, shouldn't you be avoiding Kaido?" Yuma asked concerned.

"It's fine buddy, trust me it's better if someone keeps an eye on Kaido so he doesn't get in the way. You use the fire inspector thing as an excuse to search for the Ponyglyph. We'll meet up after you get the Ponyglyph copied down. Got it?" I said.

"Yeah ok, good luck Gai." Yuma said as he went off to perform his objective.

Meanwhile I was lead to a room where the massive Kaido was drinking heavily.

"Um, Captain? This man here says that he had a meeting scheduled with you." One of Kaido's subordinates said nervously.

"Eh? Aren't you a little early?" Kaido asked. Apparently he was already so drunk he was just going along with anything someone said.

"I believe in punctuality." I said, quite frankly I was surprised that we made it this far. I kind of thought that we'd be caught immediately, so I want really sure of what to say next. So I just decided to go with the same thing that worked last time.

"So, what is it that you want?" Kaido asked impatiently as he continued drinking.

"Well sir you see, I'm quite smitten with your daughter. I'd like to ask for her hand in marriage." I said politely.

"Eh? I don't have a daughter. Only a son." Kaido replied.

"No, no I'm quite sure you have a daughter. I've seen her. People call her the Oni Princess."

"Nope, I have a son. He's going to inherit everything I have one day." Kaido said dismissively.

"No, no, no, I'm sure you have a daughter. Have you seen her side boob? She's definitely a woman."

"Ah! Don't talk about my daughter's side boob in front of me!" Kaido said as he covered his ears.

"Ha! You just admitted that she was your daughter!"

"Of course she is! I just always wanted a boy to follow in my footsteps." Kaido said sorrowfully. "Now not only that but now she goes around and calls herself Oden! Can you believe that? She uses the name of my greatest foe." Kaido said crying. He was clearly in his sad drunk phase.

"I-I see, that sounds rough." I said uncomfortably. Maybe I took the wrong approach this time.

"I rember when she used to say, "Daddy, I want to be just like you someday!" Now she just wants to be like Ofen! It makes me so sad!" He said while slurring his words.

"I see, I'm sorry I even brought it up. I didn't know it was such a big deal for you." I said sympathetically.

"It's fine, have a drink with me will you? It'd make me feel better to have someone to drink with." Kaido said.

"Eh, I don't drink. But… when you ask like that, it'd make me feel bad to refuse. Alright I'll join you." I said against my better judgment.

Drinking with Kaido turned out to be the mistake that caused the entire plan to fall apart.
