As the aircraft touched down, Kieran was there to greet me.
At the age of eighteen, he had rescued a young woman but was wrongly charged with sexual misconduct and given a three-year prison sentence.
His criminal past made it impossible for him to secure employment anywhere.
I first encountered him at an art show. He was always withdrawn, never engaging with anyone.
Whenever someone approached, he would shy away.
Subsequently, one evening as I was returning home, I was nearly attacked by some ruffians. He happened to be passing by. I assumed he would ignore the situation.
However, he didn't. He acted without hesitation.
That day I inquired: "What if I also falsely accuse you?"
He responded with a sad smile: "Then I'll face the consequences."
I utilized my family's connections to clear his reputation. When the truth was revealed, he stood at a distance, his eyes watery with emotion, bowing to express his gratitude through the crowd.
His three-year incarceration hadn't diminished his compassionate nature.
My father, grateful for Kieran saving me, extended an opportunity and arranged for him to join the company.
Beginning at the lowest level, he has now become my father's most valued aide.
"Miss, it's been a while," Kieran greeted, donning a long coat and taking hold of my luggage.
I nodded, feeling an unexplained tightness in my throat.
Five years prior, after my marriage to Silas and our move up north, my father had sent Kieran to England for intensive training. In my previous life, I never saw Kieran again until my death.
"Miss, are you planning to leave again after this visit?" he inquired.
I replied: "No, I'm staying."
Kieran gave a slight chuckle, "Mr. Chu is delighted to hear you're back."
Suddenly, I was taken aback, my hand in my pocket clenching involuntarily, a trace of sadness creeping into my heart.
Previously, my separation from Silas had become common knowledge.
My father, concerned about my well-being, flew in immediately.
He tried to reason with me earnestly:
"Silas consistently misjudges situations."
"Back then, he preferred to collaborate with Jane's father rather than accept your assistance. One could say he didn't want to depend on you, but truthfully, wasn't he relying on Jane's family's financial support?"
"Thea, it's fine if you're divorced. Silas isn't the right match for you."
He wanted to bring me home.
But I refused, weeping and insisting on staying.
I said through tears: "I love Silas, I don't want a divorce."
"Why should I be the one to suffer for his sense of obligation? Even if he pushes me to my limit, I absolutely won't leave. I won't go."
