"Y'know if you don't start taking care of yourself, you'll die before you can help anybody," Yara said as she slapped her own mixture of Tiger balm to my back. She seemed to have gotten this recipe from some Kenyan marathon runner on the internet.
"I'll be fine as long as I make the league, the pain and hurt are just something I have to get through," I replied with a light smile as I turned my attention to my phone not really up for another of her lectures.
If not for the fact she insists on applying the rub on me after every game and practice, I wouldn't have deal with this. I was sitting on the living room floor just in front of our sofa allowing her to play the cream as she sat down.
"Keep telling yourself that little bro, but neither I nor Kyra will accept your help if you're killing yourself for it," Yara said in a firm ton as she proceeded to roughly squeeze his shoulder muscle causing a jolt of pain to shoot through me as she loosens a knot.
"Ok I getting Queen Yara no getting hurt, I promise to be careful." I quickly told her hoping she would stop but she was intent on helping me loosen that knot.
It was only after a good thirty seconds that she finally stopped but by then my entire left arm felt like jelly. However, I couldn't complain as my arm already felt a hundred times more relaxed and all the tension seemed to have been squeezed out.
"You're going to need to grow up quick, colleges won't accept your attitude for long, and mum wouldn't want you to be seen as the troubled one by your coaches," Yara stated causing my happy mood to instantly vanish as I proceeded to directly get off the ground.
"Thanks, Ya, I'll go get some rest call me when dinner is ready," I told her before heading to my room without letting her say anything.
Our parents were a topic I don't like discussing especially since a part of me blames them for leaving us in this cruel world. They had no business having children if they couldn't make a good enough plan for what would happen if they died. Growing up they always had friends around them for barbecues birthdays and whatnot but none of them was close enough to them to take us in.
Heck, just helping Yara with basics like applying for disability fund, school registration for Kyra and looking for a place to live would have been enough. But no, the moment the party stopped no one was there to help clean up after them. Despite Yara also getting injured in the car accident she had to bear all the burden both physically and mentally.
Heck, the girl is stuck in a wheelchair for simply mental reasons and a lack of proper physiotherapy. The only thing their life amounted to was giving us life and all the love we could possibly need only for it to be ripped from our life. It wasn't their fault for dying but surrounded themselves with fake people who left their 22-year-old daughter to raise a 15-year-old teen and an 8-year-old girl.

Tariq: yo bro Stacy is throwing a state champ party you coming down?
Jace: Scouts already think I'm a problem no need to give em more ammunition.
Jace: Plus, it's such a cliche to crash out at some house party after winning state.
J-Street: Ain't you the crash-out king though?
Tariq: Yeah, ain't you the one who spent half the season crashing out on coach Beverly.
Tariq: poor man only wanted to make his son the starting QB of the state championship Crenshaw.
J-Street: word, about the amount of girls u be dumping on an average Wednesday.
Tariq: heard it's cause he can't close the deal, you know they got pills for dat stuff.
J-Street: Too late for pills, when practically half dem gyals think our boy gay.
Jace: see if yall don't shut F$ck up, I'm crash out fr and that's on coach Cash may he rest in peace.
Tariq: wow relax my guy you didn't have to bring Coach into this we was just having fun so what if you're gay.
J-Street: Ya man Riq is right, your pum pum game weak or you gay it don't matter to us. Just more game for the rest of us. You know what I'm saying.

Tariq: why you always gotta blow things up bro like relax, wasn't even saying all that.
J-Street: Yeah not my fault dem girls be chatting shit about your tuntun.
Jace: See if don't stop with the random Jamaican, 0.5% does not mean you can claim their whole flow bar for bar. You from the west coast, and you was born in the whitest state in America West Virginia look ass boy, my grandparents own a farm n go horse riding on Columbus Day looking a$$ boy.
Tariq: Bro leave that man alone he already dead no need for round two wae his spirit.
Jace: Don't even get me started on you Mr I'm the man but been too scared to ask out the same girl since middle school.
TJ: ahem, can yall stop blowing up the player's group chat with whatever this ménage à trois situation is?
Jace: first of all, you make a good point don't none of yall blow up my phone with texts again. Second, you better take that base out you're texts I'm still your senior for now.
Jace: these kids win one state and lose all respect for their seniors what is happening to America? Someone go start a league in El Salvador I heard they getting a functioning government.
Jace: No but what I'm trying to say is unless you ready to be stuck with that girl for the rest of your life while she raising your kid don't hit that. Girls I hang with get all the cred they want from me before we split. Ain't no girl setting a baby trap on me I got enough mouths to feed.
Jace: stay safe out there brothers and street congratulations you are the father guess what they say about bunnies is true. Peace out ✌🏾.

Leaving those final words in the group chat I quickly posted my mandatory picture of us flex with the state championship on my social before turning my phone on DND. Looking at the ceiling in my room I ignored the water mold as I let my fatigue guide me to dreamland. However, my thoughts eventually landed on Yaras's lecture over dinner.
Despite my thinking that she worries too much, it couldn't hurt to be more careful with my body. Now that I'm done with high school ball I'll have to step things up if I don't want to crash land the moment, I enter college. Being just another average player amongst other high school athletes entering college would be embarrassing.
If there is one thing, I care more about than winning a game, it would be my pride. Can't have all those who predict my failure as just another overrated player be in the right now, can I? "She doesn't have to be worried though since I heal much faster than most players. I guess them saying I have superpowers ain't all that wrong,"
