Chapter 7

At last, Lucas Ryan succumbed to the weight of his emotions and lost consciousness.

I trailed him to his hospital chamber, settling on the settee in the corner to observe him silently. Unexpectedly, I experienced a peculiar sense of contentment.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, I had fervently wished he would sense something amiss, locate me, and bring me back. However, after witnessing him excise my heart and implant it in Evelyn Snow, and subsequently noting his indifference to my vanishing, something within me shattered.

For the first instance, I grasped the meaning of feeling truly lifeless inside.

It's said that even a canine would form an attachment to its caretaker after sufficient time, but Lucas Ryan? He was as unfeeling as marble.

Then again, why would he display any fondness for me when he never loved me to begin with?
