Chapter 3

Adam scowled, barely opening his eyes as he flung the folder to the ground.

"What's this, another attempt to garner sympathy? I can't fathom why you're always so unreasonably envious."

I tried to speak, but it felt as though countless words were caught in my throat, rendering me speechless.

Exhausted, I turned away from him, unwilling to engage further.

Recognizing he'd gone too far, Adam swiftly embraced me from behind.

His gentle breath on my neck created an unexpected tickling sensation. "Mia, I apologize. I momentarily lost my composure. Please don't be upset, alright?"

"See, I even brought you a present." He revealed a necklace from his shirt, displaying it proudly.

It was a perfect match for my ring and, admittedly, in a style I admired.

Noticing my expression soften, Adam quickly fastened the necklace around my neck, his face beaming with delight.

"I also picked up your preferred red bean pastries. Shall we go downstairs and savor them together?"

The recollection flooded my mind.

That winter of our third year, feeling dejected after a poor exam result, Adam had braved the bitter cold and snow, queuing early in the morning. He'd carefully tucked the pastries in his jacket to keep them warm, then offered them to me with such affection.

Tears unexpectedly formed in my eyes.

Before I could reply, he grasped my hand, eager to head downstairs.

Feeling uncomfortable, I spoke up. "Adam, I'm not in the mood, I just want to rest."

I lacked the courage to tell him that witnessing his affectionate behavior with Chesley had made me feel ill.

Adam attempted to remain calm and persuade me. "Even if you're not hungry, you need to eat for the baby's sake."

"If you don't eat properly, how will you ensure a healthy baby?"

My expression immediately darkened and I pulled my hand away.

That's when I understood—he only cared about whether my baby's umbilical cord blood could save Chesley.

I responded coldly, "I need to sleep."

Feeling mocked, Adam instantly lashed out. "You're so difficult to handle!"

He then furiously smashed the vase on the floor, the loud crash eliciting a satisfied smile from Chesley.

Just as his anger was about to peak, Chesley calmly ascended the stairs and gently patted his back.

"Adam, don't be upset. Mia is likely experiencing prenatal depression. Let me speak with her and help her through this."

"You can go now," she added.

Adam's expression softened at her words. "Chesley, you're so considerate. I wish Mia could be half as understanding as you."

With that, he discreetly pinched Chesley's bottom before exiting the room.

Once Adam had left, Chesley dropped her facade. "Mia, it seems your baby is developing well, but sadly, he won't have a long life."

"However, since he'll help prolong my life, I'll ensure an expert performs a proper blessing for him."

I glowered at Chesley, my eyes red with fury, and snapped, "Ruining relationships, taking lives... with all the wickedness you've committed, don't you fear karmic justice?"
