Chapter 1

Just before the New Year, I learned that Adam, who had always been very nice to me, had a property. I initially believed it would be our future home when we tied the knot later in spring.

Filled with excitement, I hurried over, only to find him in bed with another woman. She was panting, and the scene was jarring.

"Adam, how do you think Mia would react if she knew you intentionally got her pregnant to use the baby's umbilical cord blood to save me?" she inquired.

Adam, with a lustful expression, continued his actions.

"She and her unborn baby mean nothing compared to you," he answered.

The noises in the room grew louder, and I stood there, shaking. I quickly made a phone call.

"Dr. Sterling, I'm ready to end my pregnancy and take part in a cryogenic study," I said, my voice unsteady.

"Mia, are you certain? Even with your cancer, there's still hope..." Alan, my teacher, replied.

But I spoke with determination.

"It's alright, professor. I've decided."

After all, I had already planned to end my life in a week.

I had just put my signature on the abortion consent form when Adam Sims, my unborn child's father, burst into the hospital, frantic.

Without warning, he struck my face, leaving a burning red mark, then ripped the surgery notice to pieces. He yelled at me, demanding to know why I was going to abort his child. I tasted blood in my mouth.

I licked the sharp, metallic flavor at my lip's edge, fighting back my heartache as I asked him, "Were you really excited about this baby's arrival?"

Adam paused briefly, his face uncertain. But he continued shouting, his voice full of fury, "Even wild animals protect their young! That's our own child! How could you decide to end its life without my permission?"

Chesley Wade, standing close by, quickly grasped my hand, her eyes watery. "Mia, aren't you the head of the Animal Protection Association? How could someone as caring as you consider ending your own baby's life?"

"I'm sure you have your reasons. Please, explain why."

I coldly pulled my hand away, my voice emotionless as I responded, "I won't keep this baby."

"The child deserves better parents, and I can't bring it into the world without being responsible."

Hearing this, Adam scoffed, his anger intensifying.

"What exactly are you implying, Mia?"

"Just because I've been swamped with work and haven't had much time for you, does that mean you think I'll be an irresponsible father?"

"I'm telling you now, this baby will be born, whether you want it or not!"

With that, he grabbed my arm and tried to drag me out of the room. The nurse who rushed in to intervene was pushed down by Adam.

Seeing Adam and me holding hands tightly, Chesley's eyes flashed with envy. She dramatically held her stomach and started crying out in discomfort.

As she appeared to be fainting, Adam suddenly pushed me towards the driver who had come with him. He quickly embraced Chesley, showing a look of concern and alarm I had never seen before.

"Driver, take Mia home and make sure all the staff and security keep watch over her."

"If anything happens to my child, none of you will survive."

Watching him anxiously carry Chesley towards the hospital, I couldn't help but smile bitterly.

He wasn't incapable of caring for others; he just didn't care for me.

When Adam and I first became a couple, we clearly agreed to live without children, dedicating all our energy to our careers.

But his physical desires were always strong.

Yet, every time we were intimate, he would refuse to use protection, claiming he disliked the feeling of any kind of barrier.
