"As time passed, I uncovered the full extent of his misconduct. It wasn't merely infidelity; he was entangled with numerous women in unsavory ways. I couldn't bear to see Claire being fooled by such a person, so I resolved to remain close to him, feign compliance, and collect proof."

"Claire, when you witnessed my apparent closeness with him, it wasn't to provoke your hatred or cause you pain. My intention was to prevent you from falling victim to his deception."

I stood motionless, my thoughts in disarray, stunned by Anne's revelation. Never had I imagined the truth could be so startling.

In that instant, William lost all composure. He extracted a knife from his coat, its edge gleaming ominously in the light.

"Stop! This is against the law!" I cried out in fear.

William, however, paid no heed, his eyes crimson with fury as he charged at Anne.

Without thinking, my body reacted instinctively. I dashed to Anne's side, embracing her protectively without hesitation.
