"What's going on here?"
Monica's sharp question broke the tense atmosphere, jolting us back to reality.
"Monica, I'm so relieved you're here!" David suddenly dropped his arrogant demeanor, his expression shifting to one of feigned innocence and terror. "I was only trying to express gratitude to Noah, but he unexpectedly attempted to end my life!"
It was a charade I'd witnessed countless times before, and I felt too desensitized to react.
Monica had always taken his side—accepting every falsehood, every tale. I'd long ago given up hope that she'd listen to my perspective. Her reaction was predictable: disappointment, accusation, revulsion.
So, I didn't even try to defend myself.
"Yes," I stated plainly, meeting her eyes unflinchingly.
"I intended to end his life."
At this point, nothing seemed to matter anymore.
For a brief moment, quiet filled the room. Then, unexpectedly, Monica pulled away from David's grasp, her voice shaky and rough.
