Chapter 22

Harry got what Mephisto Pheles meant that it would be easier to get him the High Class Devil Position without serving in anyone's Peerage by becoming his disciple.

After all, right now he is just a random guy, unaffiliated with the Devils, asking for a power-up and a long lifespan without the downsides of being bound to a Noble Devil Clan. The Evil Pieces System has a control part integrated into it, which suggests loyalty towards the King.

If one should leave a peerage without becoming a high-class devil, they would lose control over their devil powers and mutate.

That's the reason why most Stray Devils look like Monsters; only a few with a specific set of skills can maintain their control. Like Kuroka.

This is an intentional safety built into the system to not lose control over the reincarnated devils without making them loyal after years or decades of servitude.

And once part of a peerage, you would socially always remain part of that peerage, even with your own peerage. There was no way of legally leaving a peerage. That system is completely unfair to reincarnated devils.

And Harry wanted to completely bypass that safety and unfair system.

If Harry were Mephisto's student, he would have a status that technically made him closer to the Devil Race. At least on paper.

Not that Mephisto himself is particularly close. He is a so-called Extra Demon, a devil that hadn't been created by the four Satans and become part of the 72 Pillars.

No, Mephisto Pheles is from the same generation as the four Satans and came into existence independently.

He hates the original four Satans because they ordered him around.

Also Harry would gain one of the best and most experienced magicians in the world as his teacher. Although it depended on what being his student entailed.

"What would you expect of me as your student?" Harry asked thoughtfully.

"From time to time you will have to complete some tasks for me until you complete your apprenticeship. Nothing unreasonable, only some missions that would be in your strength. Of course you will have to regularly come to the Grauzauberer Headquarters to study under me. I expect you to excel in Magic, even beyond your wand waving." Mephisto gave him a short overview.

"We will have to make a contract with exact conditions and how often I have to do these 'tasks.'" Harry said, "Will it be a problem that I attend Hogwarts? Right now I am magically bound to a tournament that I have to complete."

"Good, you are not an idiot and agreed to a vague verbal deal." Mephisto nodded approvingly, "And no, you can keep studying at Hogwarts. As long as you meet my standards, it will be enough if you come in your free time. That Dimension Lost of yours should make it easy to leave these powerful Wards."

"Huh, you already identified my Sacred Gear."

"It wasn't that hard. There are not many Longinus Sub Types that could make contact with different universes over the Dimensional Gap." Mephisto stated matter-of-factly.

"That's fine with me. But I will be busy until February. I need my Evil Pieces before December!" Harry requested; he still wanted to go to the Hunter World.

There are events he wanted to attend; Greed Island has a ton of interesting things, for example.

"You don't ask for much." Mephisto stated dryly, "That's fine. I will ask for some favors. But you may owe some of the Satans for it."

Harry thought about it for a moment. The current Satans were reasonable and wouldn't exploit him too much.

"That's fine. We have a deal, Teach." Harry smirked.

"Damn, show some respect, brat." Mephisto grunted, "Here, check the contract and sign it if you are fine with it."

Once Harry checked that the terms were reasonable, he signed it.

Mephisto nodded approvingly, "So what's up with your strong Dragon Presence?"

———

The Underworld is a fascinating place, a whole separate dimension bigger than Earth but still connected to it.

Well, technically it's the same size as the planet Earth, but mostly filled with landmass, no oceans, only some lakes.

At first the permanent Purple Sky is a bit strange, but you get used to it. Harry saw quite a bit of the Underworld from his window on the train that flew through the sky. Apparently it's a tradition for first-time visitors to take the train.

To his surprise, King's Cross had another hidden part besides Platform 9 3/4, which one could board for the Underworld.

Mephisto had just sent him the details on where and when to board his train and made him travel all alone. Although it was quite the interesting journey, it took far too long.

Fortunately, his goal had finally appeared on the horizon, a sight he saw for the first time in real life: a flying city.

Agreas, a beautiful city floating in the air of the Underworld, and from what he knew, the most advanced place in it.

"Good, there you are. You kept me waiting, brat. Was the first thing Harry heard as he stepped out of the train.

"Yeah, sure. I kept you waiting by taking the train you told me to."

"I was already here; you got here after me; therefore, you kept me waiting. Now come on, let's get this over with." Mephisto said as he headed off into the city.

"Let me guess. You want to continue your research on the Devil Slayer Magic System…"

"That should be obvious. Keep walking; don't waste time."

In the short time Harry knew Mephisto, he had figured him out quite well. That Ancient Devil was an absolute Magic Nerd.

Offering a magic tome from another world had been the perfect choice to get this deal done.

Mephisto led me deeper into the city towards a massive building, part of a greater complex in the center of Agreas.

From what Harry had been told beforehand, inside was the device they would use to turn him into a devil, the King's Monument.

Harry was brought to a room where already two people were waiting for them. A quite attractive-looking young man, who seemed to be in his twenties.

He has light blue eyes and slicked-back green hair. This is Ajuka Beelzebub, one of the three currently existing Super Devils, who, like Mephisto, has a mysterious aura around him.

The other person is a magical girl.

A beautiful black-haired girl, her hair tied into twin tails and blue eyes. While she was short, she fit into an Ero World with her large breasts.

Ajuka's eyes fixated on Harry's as soon as he was using Gyo to observe the two Satans.

Like Memphisto, they couldn't use their Aura, but they sensed when he was using it. And even while their Aura nodes were not awakened, the natural Aura they were releasing, like any living being not in Zetsu, was massive. In fact, the biggest ones he had seen, even bigger than Netero.

Harry had no doubt that if he awakened their Nen, their En range would be several kilometers without any major training.

His eyes met Serafall's. "I didn't expect to meet a cute magical girl in the Underworld! You sure we are in the right place, Mephisto?"

At that, Serafall's eyes lit up as she gave him a thumbs up. "I like you, Male So-tan!"

Male So-tan? Because of the dark hair and glasses? Before he could reply with anything, he got interrupted.

"Stop flirting with the powerful Satan that can freeze your balls off, troublesome student of mine. Let's get done with this!" Mephisto grumped as he pushed them forward.

Ajuka called him forward, "While I would love to study the strange method you use to manipulate your Lifeforce, Mephisto is right. We have business to do. Place your hand on the monument."

The monument was pretty much a large piece of crystal, in the shape of a chess king. As Harry placed his hand on it, it began to glow in emerald green.

At first he didn't feel any major change, but suddenly a pair of leathery bat-like wings appeared on his back, and his magic power began to change.

It shrank?

"Eh, why is the amount of magic I have shrinking?" Harry asked nervously if something was going wrong.

"You didn't tell him?" Ajuka asked Mephisto, who just shrugged with his shoulders.

"I forgot."

With a sigh, Ajuka turned towards Harry, "Since your teacher doesn't feel he needs to elaborate. I will take over that task. It's nothing bad. Your magic power is shrinking because you are a wizard."

"What has being a wizard to do with becoming weaker? I never heard of any magician losing magic power after becoming a devil!" Harry replied, confused, as he felt his magic kept shrinking at a slow rate.

"That will take a bit. The reason lies in the origin of wizardkind." Ajuka explained calmly, "During the great War between the three factions, many devils perished, leaving our kind at the brink of extinction with our low birth rates. The Evil Pieces are just the most successful solution to that problem; there have been many experiments and attempts to recreate Lilith's and Lucifer's work of creating devils. One of them has been a human experiment on the ancestors of wizardkind. They were pretty much infused with demonic power."

"So I already have demonic power?" Harry asked, now even more unsure of what was going on.

"No, the energy you use for magic is not demonic power. That's also why your reserves are shrinking. The magic power within you is a corrupted hybrid of demonic energy and the natural magical energies from the environment. Your ancestors absorbed these natural energies to counterbalance the destructive effects of demonic power ravaging their bodies during the experiment. Right now, your body is essentially converting your weaker magic power into pure demonic power." Ajuka explained, "The birth of wizards was purely coincidental."

"Oh, so the demonic Power part of our Magic is probably responsible for why we can use imagination-based magic. So is it shrinking for every Magician that gets turned into a Devil?" He had never heard of anything like that, but the process made so much sense.

"That is an effect of the strange physiology of Wizards. Devils are beings with high natural storage capacity for energy. Meanwhile, humans have a low storage capacity for any form of energy; that's the reason they are known as the weakest race. The same goes for magicians who are humans; most of their magic relies on calculations and their low amount of magical energy to create larger spells by using the natural magical energies all around us." Ajuka explained.

"But that's not true for Wizards?" Harry realized.

"Correct, through the insertion of demonic energy, the wizard physiology has mutated to be able to contain far more energy. Most human magicians have barely the amount of low-class devils, but wizards naturally reach the level of mid-class devils in pure capacity. The stronger ones, even high-class devils, I can feel you have almost reached the magical levels of an ultimate class devil. Yours is the biggest capacity I have ever felt in a wizard.", Ajuka pointed out, "But the quality of the energy you are able to naturally use is far lower; it's basically a lot of mass with low amounts of power."

"I get it. So I am turning to a devil right now, but it's first converting my magical energy into the far more powerful but concentrated demonic power. Wouldn't that make a wizard-turned-devil reserve far higher?" Harry realized that if he had the magical energies of a high-class devil before turning into a devil, he wouldn't end up at least at the ultimate class after being fully converted.

"Exactly, for most humans this process is fast. It just needs to convert a low amount of magical energy into demonic power before the body can grow the demonic power naturally, like for any devil. This takes at most hours. For Wizards it's a bit more complex. Right now your body is separating your magical power into pure demonic power and magical power before converting it into demonic power too. That strange mutated form of Magic Power can't be directly converted, effectively adding another step with your massive reserves." Ajuka finally mentioning the major downside of a Wizards conversion into a Devil.

"So how long will it take?"

"A few months at least. During that time you have less Magic power available."

That's not really too bad; after absorbing Ddraig's Soul, he had become far better at using his magic. Any spell took far less out of him.

And he still had his Nen.

Once he returned to the Hunter World, that time would pass quickly enough. And while his magic had been temporarily nerfed, he could feel that his body had reached superhuman levels of strength.

Alone, his body should be on the level of a Chimera Ant Royal Guard. Chimera ants were known for taking the best genetics of the species they eat, but devils are a supernatural race.

His magic may not be as strong as he thought it would get; for now, his physical abilities and Nen were supercharged. He could feel his aura capacity was at least 5 times higher.

"Okay, that is manageable." Harry nodded, "If that is the only downside, why do you guys not turn more Wizards into Devils? If I got you right, I should at least end up an Ultimate Class Devil; isn't that the wet dream of any High Class Devil?"

"Ultimate Class after converting your existing Magic, much higher after fully having filled out your capacity. Congratulations, you are the first reincarnated devil with super devil levels of demonic power." Ajuka admitted.

"Like you and Sirzechs Lucifer?" As Ajuka nodded, Harry turned his gaze towards Mephisto, "You knew that! That's the true reason why you wanted me as an apprentice! I feel like I am overpaying you, Old Devil!"

"Too bad that we have a contract! You are centuries too early trying to trick me, my dear student! Smirked Mephisto before changing the topic, "We don't turn more Wizards into Devils, even though Wizards like your Headmaster could easily become Ultimate Class, because we prefer not to have anything to do with that clusterfuck of a society."

"That makes some sense. But wouldn't it be worth it to recruit some easy high-class and Ultimate Class Devils in secret?" Harry asked, Sure, the Wizarding World is corrupt, but not all of them.

"The whole supernatural world aborted contact with Wizardkind for one reason: they enslaved a whole race for eternity. A deed not even the devils did at their worst." Ajuka added as Harry turned towards him, his eyes widening.

"What?"

"You call them House-elves now." Serafall said a bit sadly, "That wasn't always their name. Once they have been called Imps, a race of lesser Devils. Wizards abused the fact that they contain demonic power to devise a ritual with the ability to strip a demonic race of all their demonic power and bind them to their own. Imps need demonic power to survive, but they are unable to produce it themselves or absorb it anymore. All they can use is that bastardized form of Demonic Power that Wizards use. They had the choice to serve Wizardkind or go extinct."

"Of course they did something like this. No wonder you isolated them. That was probably too evil for the other races too."

"Not only that. They tried to do the same with all Devils." Serafall said.

"What? Are they mad?" Harry shouted, sure that thanks to their unique nature, wizards had no less potential than any pure-blooded devil, but only after becoming devils. The quality of their magic power was nothing compared to demonic power; their spells were far weaker.

They would easily lose a war.

"Probably a side effect of how they mutated. Demonic Power is corruptive and has affected at least their common sense.", Ajuka added.

That made sense? Common sense, or logic, was not often seen in the Wizarding World.

"While they tried to enslave the whole Devil Race. Wizardkind was far too weak for that ritual to work. But they were still a threat to younger Devils. So we removed all Rituals and Summoning Contracts from their world. Serafall continued, "So they never could attempt to enslave Devils again. Although there had been debates about exterminating the whole race. Unfortunately, while considered evil, other factions didn't agree with a genocide."

Wizardkind was almost wiped out a few centuries ago. Good to know.

Suddenly, Serafall's demeanor made a complete 180: "Enough of these annoying topics. Ne Ne male So-tan, do you like magical girls? Are you a fan of Miracle Levia-tan? Want an autograph?"

"Call me Harry. I have no idea who So-tan is. I am pretty new to the Underworld or the Supernatural World and have only gathered a bit of intel. You are the first Magical Girl I've met, and I have to admit, I enjoy it!" Harry replied genuinely. Although he knew a bit more than he mentioned, he had no reasonable way to explain how.

"Oh, you're new? Really? It didn't feel like it at all! You even knew about Ajuka-chan and Sirzechs-chan being Super Devils—kyaa~! You're so well-informed! Are you sure you're not secretly a Devil otaku? You are just as smart as So-tan. You really remind me of her. Teehee~!" Serafall said.

"So-tan is her sister. Sona Sitri." Ajuka added for context, "I will take my leave since we are done here. But a small piece of advice from one Super Devil to another: keep practicing your control. You have the unique advantage that your reserves are gradually growing. Good luck with your exam."

With these parting words, Ajuka vanished in a magic circle before Harry could say anything else, "What exam?"

"Your high-class devil exam, of course. You are funny. Harry-chan? Harry-tan? Har-tan?"

Oh god. Harry turned towards Mephisto, who looked innocently at him, "They can't just hand out Evil Pieces Sets to anyone! Of course you will have to take the exam. I am sure it will be fine. Good luck. You know how to get home? Good."

The bastard also vanished.

"I will take you to your exam, Har-tan! Let's go!" Serafall said as she grabbed his arm and pulled him with her, "So, Har-tan, what are your hobbies?"

"Well, training, studying, flying…" realizing that none of them were really a hobby but more work-related, he added, "And chess, I guess."

He hadn't had time to do anything else really. Hobbies had been the last thing on his mind.

With more context to the Universe, Quidditch sounded like a ridiculous made-up sport to give a fictional character something special since it mainly relied on the Seeker, coincidentally the Position the Main Character of his own Book Series, himself got.

Besides Quidditch, chess had been the thing he did most often.

"What's with Glasses-wearing People and Chess? Is it like something that has been genetically imprinted with the Glasses Genes?"

"How should I know? Ajuka sounds like the guy who would know about something like that." Harry sighed, being so done with the world right now.
