My tone was cold, as I wanted her to understand my resolve.
But as Melody walked out, she said:
"Brent, you're just jealous! You'll regret this once you've calmed down! I've just gotten back from a business trip, and there's a ton of work waiting for me at the office. How could I possibly have time to go to the courthouse!"
She was clearly just stalling.
She thought time could wash everything away, that I would love and indulge her like before.
But what she didn't know was that I had completely lost faith in her.
I first took our son to my parents' place, asking them to watch him for a few days.
My parents sensed something was wrong between Melody and me, and only then learned I wanted a divorce.
At first, they tried to talk me out of it, but knowing her stubborn nature, they eventually held their tongues.
Since I'd been living off Melody's money these past few years, I was prepared to leave with nothing.
So next, I needed to find a job.
Luckily, I graduated from a top university, and I'd only been unemployed for a year, so finding work wasn't too difficult.
It took less than a day from job hunting to getting hired.
That evening, I went home to pack my things.
As I was leaving with three large suitcases, I ran into Melody coming out of the elevator.Behind her stood Fintan.
"Brent, you're being a bit childish here. Was it really necessary to run away from home over an argument? Look, Fintan's here. I've asked him to explain things to you."
She gave Fintan a meaningful glance, and he immediately spoke up:
"Bro, you've got it all wrong. People from other countries greet each other with hugs and kisses all the time. You wouldn't know since you've never been abroad."
He then put on a sympathetic expression: "You have no idea how much your sister cares about you. She was completely distracted at work today, all because of your misunderstanding."
"If I really wanted something to happen with sis, it would've happened long ago. You don't need to worry about that. Sis treats me like her own little brother. Our relationship is so close, what's wrong with a hug?"
After Fintan's slick explanation, Melody looked at me with a haughty expression:
"Brent, the person in question is right here. Now you have to believe me, right?"
I couldn't tell if she was genuinely clueless or just playing dumb.
Did she really think Fintan was here to help smooth things over?
I thought I'd be unmoved seeing Fintan, but I underestimated how thick-skinned he could be. I was so angry I wanted to go over and kill him.But I can't.
After all, my child is already about to lose their mother.
They can't lose their father too.
I fought back the anger in my heart, pressing my lips tightly together, and deftly dodged the two people trying to block me.
But I didn't expect Fintan to catch up from behind, grabbing my hand in one swift motion.
