Chapter 3

Hard to let go?

Coming from Lucas's mouth, those words were truly extraordinary.

Lucas and I met through a matchmaking service.

He was young and accomplished, the youngest associate chief physician at a top-tier hospital, and handsome to boot.

But due to his traditional and demanding parents, he had never been able to marry.

They were extremely controlling and insisted on a daughter-in-law who was docile, obedient, quick-witted, and skilled at serving others.

The first time I went to Lucas's home, his mother brought out a basin of water, expecting me to wash her feet.

But I was willing to endure all this.

Because the moment I laid eyes on Lucas...

I thought, for that face, I'd do anything.

We dated for two years.

His parents were very satisfied with me.

And he gradually became accustomed to an always clean and tidy home, hot soup and dishes always ready, clothes always pressed and crisp...

But his attitude remained lukewarm.

Until his birthday this year, when I wanted to bake him a cake myself.

The oven exploded during preheating.

When he rushed to the hospital and saw my arms covered in glass shards,

For the first time, he lost his composure, frantically cradling my face, his voice trembling.

"You don't have to do these things for me... It's okay if you don't..."Even though he never said he couldn't bear to part with me, he eventually proposed.

I originally thought he must have felt some genuine affection, wanting to build a future together.

But I never expected it was just to fulfill his parents' wishes.

Britta was the one he cherished enough to let go.

The moment I saw their conversation, I knew this relationship needed to end.

He was putting on an act for his parents, while I was putting on an act for myself.

But no matter how well we performed, it was still just a performance in the end.
