Chapter 27

My head was pounding with pain.

Logic and emotion were battling fiercely within me.

The children watched our intense argument with despair in their eyes.

The youngest ones huddled tightly together, fingers interlocked, as if awaiting their final judgment.

My heart softened almost instantly.

They had already done their utmost to escape from hell.

We couldn't send them back there.

Taking a few deep breaths, I regained my composure.

"I'll help you.

"But I won't just help you contact the pickup team. I'm going to stay here and personally see every one of them off."

Lucas was stunned and immediately refused.

"No way! It's too dangerous!"

"So I'm supposed to let you face the danger alone, Fintan?"

"If you don't agree, I'll go out right now and tell them there are Hutu kids hidden here."

He gritted his teeth.

"...You! I never should have come to you!"

"It's too late, you've already dragged me into this."

Lucas was angry with himself and turned away, refusing to speak to me.
