"Master, Zheng Lin has arrived!" At the sound of the voice, a man with a refined, jade-like demeanor stepped out from behind Mo Yu. This was none other than Zheng Lin, one of the four guardians of the Eternal Night Order, renowned for his unparalleled medical skills.
"Master, it's quite late..."
"Quickly, examine her!" Gu Han interrupted Zheng Lin's words, his gaze filled with anxiety as he turned towards the figure lying on the bed—Yue Lan, barely clinging to life.
Master had returned with a woman, one who had been poisoned and wounded. How had he never noticed? Was it possible that he, too, had developed feelings?
Though curious, Zheng Lin knew that the most pressing matter was the condition of the young woman before them.
As he approached, he was struck by her beauty. Even with her injuries, her elegance remained undiminished.
"Quickly, examine her," Gu Han urged, his tone cold as he released a wave of pressure, feeling a slight discomfort upon seeing Zheng Lin so transfixed by Yue Lan's appearance.
Startled, Zheng Lin quickly refocused, knowing full well that his master's temper could not be taken lightly. He immediately began his examination.
"How is she?" Gu Han asked, his anxiety evident as he noticed the conflicted expression on Zheng Lin's face. Could she not be saved?
"Master, this young woman has been poisoned by a mandrake. With a few doses of medicine and some medicinal baths, she should be fully recovered in less than a month." Zheng Lin hesitated, seemingly troubled. "But the process will be painful."
"As long as she can recover, that's all that matters!" Gu Han breathed a sigh of relief, though he knew well that any cure would be accompanied by suffering. At least there was hope.
Mandrake, a poison from the Western Regions, was little known in the Central Plains, and few knew how to cure it.
Actually, the antidote wasn't difficult to procure. He recalled a time when he had witnessed a doctor in the Western Regions treat a man poisoned by mandrake. The process had been painful, but it was manageable. Sighing, Gu Han could only hope that the young woman would not succumb to the agony.
"Why haven't you prepared the medicine?" Gu Han's patience waned as he observed Zheng Lin lingering in thought, his tone sharp.
Zheng Lin's mouth twitched before he turned and left without a word. Best not to interfere with his master any longer.
Once Zheng Lin had departed, Gu Han sat by the bed, his mind wandering as he gazed at Yue Lan.
The first time he had seen her was at Cuiyan Tower. His good friend Victor Skylar owned the establishment, and after finishing some business at Xuandu, he had stopped by to share a drink. But Victor had been called away, leaving only a brief exchange before departing.
As Gu Han sat in silence, preparing to leave, she appeared before him, descending like a celestial being. Time seemed to freeze as he watched her, transfixed.
She moved like a flame, her every gesture full of grace, her beauty mesmerizing yet never vulgar. There was an aura about her that left an indelible impression. Only when the applause of the crowd broke the silence did he snap back to reality.
A woman from a brothel—what was she doing in the woods at this hour, poisoned no less? Did she harbor some hidden secret?
...
"Master, the medicine is ready!" Zheng Lin entered, holding the medicinal bowl. He found Gu Han staring intently at the woman, unmoving. "It seems we may have a future Lady of the Tower."
"I'll feed her," Gu Han said, without hesitation, taking the bowl from Zheng Lin's hands. He blew on the medicine to cool it before gently attempting to feed it to Yue Lan. But she was unable to drink it, no matter how many times he tried.
"Use your mouth to feed her!" Zheng Lin spoke bluntly. One of the symptoms of mandrake poisoning was difficulty swallowing, which likely explained why the young woman couldn't take the medicine.
Gu Han's face flushed slightly. Was this the time to take advantage of the situation? It hardly seemed the act of a righteous man.
"Unless you want her to succumb to the poison," Zheng Lin pressed, his urgency palpable. "What's the point of hesitating over such details in a moment like this?"
Reluctantly, Gu Han gave a small nod. "You go out."
Zheng Lin, understanding his master's discomfort, swiftly left the room.
Once alone, Gu Han hesitated for only a moment before he took the medicine into his mouth and, without further thought, pressed his lips to Yue Lan's, gently prying her mouth open to administer the antidote. He repeated the process until the entire bowl was emptied.
