Chapter 18: The Seer’s Warning

The seer's glowing eyes seemed to pierce through Leo, as though they could see every thought and memory hidden within him. Their presence was unsettling, but it wasn't overtly hostile. It was something worse—an eerie neutrality, as if they stood outside of time and space, untouched by mortal concerns.

Kaelara stepped forward, her hand still on her blade. "We need your help. The shadows are closing in faster than we anticipated, and we can't locate the fragments of light without you."

The seer tilted their head, their movements almost inhuman. "Help?" they echoed, their voice reverberating like it came from multiple directions at once. "Help is a fleeting concept. What you seek comes with a price."

Leo frowned, gripping the Staff of Resonance tighter. "What price?"

The seer turned their gaze to him, and he felt an icy chill run down his spine. "You," they said simply.

"Me?" Leo asked, his voice uneven.

The seer nodded slowly. "Your presence disturbs the balance. You are an anomaly, a creature born of chaos. Wherever you go, the threads of fate unravel. To aid you is to risk everything. Tell me, why should I?"

Leo clenched his fists, anger bubbling beneath the surface. "I didn't ask for this. I didn't choose to be some 'anomaly.' But I'm here, and I'm not backing down. If you think I'm just going to roll over and let the shadows win, you've got another thing coming."

The seer's expression didn't change, but the air grew heavier, as if the room itself disapproved of his defiance. Kaelara stepped closer to him, her voice calm but firm.

"We're not asking you to gamble blindly," she said. "We know the risks, but we're willing to face them. The fragments of light are the only chance we have to stop the shadows from consuming everything. If you don't help us, you're dooming countless lives."

The seer was silent for a long moment, their glowing eyes flickering. Then, they raised a hand, and the room seemed to shift around them. The walls dissolved into darkness, and a swirling vortex of light and shadow appeared before them.

"Behold," the seer said, their voice distant and cold. "This is the path you seek."

Within the vortex, images flickered—cities crumbling under waves of shadow, people consumed by darkness, and faint glimmers of light that struggled to hold their ground. Among the chaos, Leo saw glimpses of himself, fighting alongside the unbound, wielding the staff against monstrous foes.

But then the images changed. The shadows grew stronger, their tendrils reaching into places untouched by darkness before. The unbound fell, one by one, until only Leo remained. He was alone, battered and broken, standing against an endless tide of shadow.

Leo's stomach churned as the vision faded, leaving only the seer's unsettling gaze.

"This is what lies ahead," the seer said. "Victory and defeat are intertwined. The fragments of light may bring salvation—or ruin. The choice is yours, but know this: the path you walk will demand everything you have. And even that may not be enough."

Kaelara's jaw tightened, but she didn't look away. "We'll take that risk. Tell us where to find the fragments."

The seer extended a hand, and a faintly glowing map appeared in the air. It pulsed with light, marking several locations scattered across the world.

"These are the resting places of the fragments," the seer said. "Each one is guarded, hidden in places where the veil is thinnest. You will face trials beyond anything you have known. And the shadows will be hunting you every step of the way."

Leo stared at the map, his mind racing. "How do we know this isn't a trap?"

The seer's eyes flickered. "You don't. But if you linger here, debating trust, the shadows will claim you before you take your next breath."

Kaelara turned to Leo, her expression resolute. "We have to go. The longer we wait, the stronger the shadows become."

Leo nodded reluctantly, still uneasy but knowing she was right. "Fine. Let's do this."

The seer's hand lowered, and the map folded itself into a small orb of light. It floated toward Kaelara, who caught it and tucked it away.

"Go," the seer said. "But remember: the fragments are not merely objects. They are pieces of a greater whole, imbued with purpose and will. They may not wish to be found. Convincing them to join you will be its own battle."

Leo opened his mouth to ask what they meant, but the seer raised a hand, and the chamber around them dissolved.

---

When Leo and Kaelara emerged from the ruins, the rest of the group was still holding the shadows at bay. The sight was chaos—Marcus's axe gleamed as he cut down shadowbound, while Eris moved like a phantom, her daggers slicing through the enemy with precision.

"We have what we need!" Kaelara shouted.

Eris glanced over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing. "Then get us out of here!"

Kaelara raised the orb, and a burst of light erupted from it. The shadows recoiled, hissing as they were driven back. The group seized the moment to retreat, regrouping at the edge of the ruins.

As they caught their breath, Eris rounded on Leo and Kaelara. "Well?" she demanded. "Did the seer help, or did we risk our necks for nothing?"

Kaelara handed her the orb. "We have the locations of the fragments. But it won't be easy. The seer warned us that the shadows will stop at nothing to keep us from reaching them."

Marcus grinned, hefting his axe. "Good. I was starting to get bored."

Eris shook her head, muttering something under her breath. Then she turned to the group. "Rest up while you can. We leave at dawn. The first fragment isn't far, but the journey won't be easy."

Leo sat down, his back against a crumbling wall. The exhaustion from the trial and the fight was catching up to him, but his mind wouldn't stop racing. The seer's words echoed in his ears, a constant reminder of what was at stake.

Victory and defeat are intertwined.

He didn't know what the future held, but one thing was certain: the fight was only just beginning.
