The colossal shadow serpent reared back, its body coiled in an ever-shifting mass of darkness. Its glowing eyes burned like twin suns, locked onto the group with a predator's focus. The air around them seemed to thrum with its malevolent energy, making it hard to breathe.
"Spread out!" Kaelara commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos. "Don't let it target all of us at once!"
The unbound moved swiftly. Kaelara darted to the left, her glowing blade ready. Eris vanished into the shadows, her form blending with the mist. Marcus planted his feet firmly, hefting his massive axe with both hands. Leo stayed back, gripping the Staff of Resonance tightly, the fragment's cold energy still pulsing in his palm.
The serpent struck first, its massive head lunging at Marcus with lightning speed. He swung his axe in a wide arc, the blade glowing faintly as it connected with the serpent's snout. The blow sent a ripple through its form, but the creature barely recoiled.
"That's all you got?" Marcus growled, bracing himself for another attack.
Eris appeared behind the serpent, her daggers flashing as she aimed for its coiled body. The blades sank in, but instead of flesh, they struck something cold and unyielding. A pulse of dark energy shot out, sending her tumbling backward.
"It's not fully corporeal!" she shouted, rolling to her feet.
Kaelara charged, her sword glowing brighter as she channeled energy into it. "Then we focus on disrupting it!" She slashed at the serpent's side, and this time, the blade left a searing gash. The serpent hissed, the wound oozing shadowy tendrils before closing almost instantly.
"Not fast enough," she muttered, retreating before it could counter.
Leo stood at a distance, his mind racing. The Staff of Resonance glowed faintly, resonating with the fragment in his hand. He could feel the serpent's presence pressing against his thoughts, its voice echoing in his mind.
You cannot win, cursed one, it whispered. Your luck will fail you as it always has.
He shook his head, forcing the voice out. Focus, Leo. You've faced worse. Think!
The fragment in his palm pulsed again, almost as if it were responding to his thoughts. He remembered what Kaelara had said: the staff and the fragments were connected. If the staff could amplify the fragment's energy, maybe it could also weaken the serpent.
"Keep it distracted!" he shouted, raising the staff.
"What are you doing?" Kaelara yelled, dodging another strike from the serpent's tail.
"Trust me!" Leo replied.
The serpent roared, turning its attention to Leo as he channeled the staff's energy. A beam of light shot from its tip, striking the fragment in his hand. The shard flared with an intense blue glow, and the serpent let out a deafening screech.
"It's working!" Eris shouted, taking advantage of the distraction to land another strike.
The serpent thrashed wildly, its massive tail sweeping across the plateau. Marcus barely dodged the attack, his axe biting into the ground as he used it to steady himself.
Kaelara saw an opening and charged, her blade glowing like a beacon. She aimed for the serpent's head, slashing through one of its glowing eyes. The creature howled, rearing back in pain.
"Leo, whatever you're doing, keep doing it!" she called.
Leo gritted his teeth, pouring more energy into the fragment. The light grew brighter, and the serpent's form began to waver, its edges fraying like smoke in the wind.
But the strain was taking its toll. Leo's arms trembled, and his vision blurred. The fragment's energy was overwhelming, threatening to consume him.
"I can't... hold it!" he gasped.
Kaelara rushed to his side, placing a hand on his shoulder. "You're not alone. We've got you."
Marcus and Eris closed in, their combined attacks forcing the serpent to retreat further. The creature's form flickered, its once-mighty presence now a shadow of itself.
"Now, Leo!" Kaelara shouted. "Finish it!"
Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, Leo raised the staff high. The fragment's light exploded outward, engulfing the serpent in a blinding wave of energy.
The creature let out one final, agonized roar before it dissolved into nothingness, its shadowy form scattered by the light.
Silence fell over the plateau. The mist began to clear, revealing the night sky above. The fragment in Leo's hand dimmed, its glow fading to a faint shimmer.
"Is it... gone?" Marcus asked, his voice cautious.
Eris nodded, though her expression remained wary. "For now. But something tells me it wasn't the last guardian we'll face."
Leo sank to his knees, the staff clattering to the ground beside him. He was exhausted, every muscle in his body screaming in protest.
Kaelara knelt beside him, her expression softening. "You did well, Leo. Better than any of us could have."
He managed a weak smile. "I'm starting to think this curse might actually be useful sometimes."
Marcus let out a booming laugh, slapping him on the back. "You've got more fight in you than most people I've met, kid. Don't sell yourself short."
Eris picked up the Staff of Resonance, inspecting it carefully before handing it back to Leo. "You're the one who has to carry this burden. Just make sure you don't let it break you."
"I'll try," he said, taking the staff.
Kaelara stood, helping Leo to his feet. "We've got the second fragment. But the journey's far from over."
Leo nodded, his resolve hardening. The fight had left him shaken, but also more determined than ever. The unbound had faced the darkness and prevailed, but Greyveil was just one step on a much longer path.
As the group descended the mountain, the shadow of their victory lingered behind them, a reminder of the battles yet to come.
