Chapter 12: A Father’s Decision

The classroom fell silent as the master concluded the lesson for the day. With a soft nod, he dismissed the students and retreated to his quarters, leaving behind an air of calm and satisfaction. Yin Zian lingered at his desk, his focus still on the notes he had meticulously written.

Moments later, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Zian's father entered the academy, his posture upright and his expression composed, though his eyes softened upon seeing the master. The two men greeted each other warmly.

"Welcome," the master said, bowing slightly. "It's an honor to have you here."

Zian's father smiled and returned the gesture. "I've come to see how my son is doing. I hope he isn't causing you any trouble."

The master chuckled lightly, motioning for Zian's father to sit. "Not at all. In fact, Yin Zian is an exceptional student. He has a natural curiosity and a love for learning that is rare. It's been a pleasure teaching him."

Hearing this, Zian's father's smile grew wider. "I'm glad to hear that. It gives me immense joy to know he's thriving here. To be honest, I was concerned about his happiness. At home, my wife is strict with him—perhaps too strict at times. She loves him deeply, but her way of showing it often feels harsh. I was afraid he might lose his childhood joy. But if he's happy here, making friends and focusing on his studies, I think it would be best for him to stay."

The master nodded in agreement, his eyes warm. "It's true. Zian has settled in well. My own son, Yu, has grown quite fond of him. They've become close friends, and I can see how much they enjoy each other's company. If Zian were to leave now, Yu would be heartbroken. And truthfully, I consider Zian like my own child. Please, rest assured—he is in good hands."

Zian's father let out a relieved sigh, his expression softening further. "Thank you, Master. Your words mean a lot to me. I'll speak with my wife and convince her to let Zian remain here. It's clear this is where he belongs."

As they exchanged farewells, Zian's father stepped outside, a sense of contentment washing over him. His gaze shifted to the courtyard, where he spotted Yu and a group of boys gathered around Zian. They were teasing him playfully, their laughter filling the air.

Instead of intervening, Yu's father stood at a distance, watching with a knowing smile. He could see the camaraderie and joy in their interactions. Yin Zian, once reserved and burdened, now laughed freely as he dodged Yu's playful jabs.

Turning to the master, Zian's father said with a smile, "It seems my son has found not just a place to learn but a place to truly belong."

The master nodded, his own smile mirroring the sentiment. "Indeed, he has."

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a golden glow over the academy, Yin Zian's father walked away with a heart lighter than it had been in years, reassured that his son's future was brighter than ever.
