The morning air was thick with tension as we prepared to leave for the location of the third ward. Claire had pinpointed it to an ancient cave system near the cliffs overlooking Springey.
The closer we got to completing the wards, the more dangerous the mission became, and all of us could feel the weight of what was to come.
"Everyone ready?" Claire asked, her tone clipped as she stuffed her notebook into her bag.
Van nodded, his golden energy pulsing faintly around his hands.
"Let's move quickly. If Malric knows we're heading to the third ward, he won't hesitate to strike again."
Kyle stretched lazily, his shadow blade shimmering briefly in his hand.
"Relax, golden boy. We've handled everything he's thrown at us so far."
Van shot him a glare, but before they could start bickering, I stepped between them.
"Enough. We're wasting time. Let's go."
The journey to the cliffs was long and arduous, the rocky terrain making it difficult to navigate. As we neared the entrance to the cave, a sense of unease settled over me. The air felt colder here, heavier, as if the darkness was waiting for us just beyond the shadows.
"We're here," Claire said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The cave loomed before us, its entrance lined with jagged rocks that seemed to form the shape of a gaping mouth. The faint hum of power emanated from within, and I could feel the ward's presence, distant but strong.
"Stay close," Van said, his voice low as he took the lead.
The cave was darker than I'd expected, the light from our lanterns barely cutting through the thick shadows. The walls were etched with ancient symbols, similar to the ones on the wards, but these felt different—more sinister.
As we ventured deeper, the hum of power grew louder, almost like a heartbeat. But with it came another sound: a faint whispering, like voices carried on the wind.
"Do you hear that?" I asked, glancing at the others.
Kyle nodded, his shadow blade appearing in his hand.
"Yeah. And I don't like it."
"Neither do I," Claire admitted, her grip tightening on her rune dagger.
Van stopped abruptly, his golden eyes narrowing.
"We're not alone."
The moment he spoke, the shadows around us began to move. From the darkness emerged a figure cloaked in swirling black energy, his crimson eyes glowing with malevolence.
"Malric," Van growled, stepping in front of me protectively.
"Ah, my dear Guardian," Malric said, his voice smooth and mocking.
"And her little team of misfits. How touching."
"We won't let you stop us," I said, my voice firm despite the fear twisting in my chest.
Malric's smile widened.
"Stop you? Oh, Amber, I don't intend to stop you. I intend to destroy you."
With a flick of his wrist, the shadows around him surged forward, forming monstrous shapes that lunged at us. Van's golden shield flared to life, deflecting the attack, while Kyle and Claire leapt into action, their weapons slicing through the shadowy creatures.
"Amber, go!" Van shouted, holding back a wave of darkness with his energy.
I hesitated for a moment, torn between staying to help and doing what needed to be done. But then Claire's voice cut through the chaos.
"We'll handle this! Find the ward!"
Nodding, I turned and ran deeper into the cave, the hum of the ward guiding me like a beacon. The air grew colder with every step, and the whispering voices grew louder, almost deafening.
Finally, I reached the heart of the cave, where the third ward stood—a massive crystal embedded in the ground, its surface covered in glowing runes. But as I approached, the shadows coalesced into a figure blocking my path.
"You think you can defeat me, little Guardian?"
Malric's voice echoed through the chamber as he stepped forward, his crimson eyes burning with fury.
"You can't stop me," I said, summoning the light within me.
Malric laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down my spine.
"We'll see about that."
He lunged at me, his shadowy blade slicing through the air. I barely managed to dodge, my light flaring as I countered with a burst of energy. The clash of our powers shook the chamber, the crystal ward glowing brighter with each impact.
"Amber!"
Van's voice rang out as he appeared in the chamber, his golden energy blazing as he charged at Malric.
Together, we fought, our powers combining in a dazzling display of light and shadow. For every blow Malric struck, we countered with equal force, our determination outweighing his malice.
"Focus on the ward!" Van shouted, holding Malric at bay.
I turned back to the crystal, placing my hands on its surface and pouring my energy into it. The runes flared to life, the light within the crystal growing brighter and brighter until it engulfed the entire chamber.
Malric let out a furious roar as the light consumed him, his shadowy form dissolving into nothingness.
When the light faded, the chamber was quiet once more, the whispers silenced. The ward pulsed faintly, its energy stable and secure.
"You did it," Van said, his voice filled with relief as he approached me.
"We did it," I corrected, smiling at him.
He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face.
"You're incredible, Amber. Never doubt that."
Before I could respond, Kyle and Claire appeared, both looking worse for wear but alive.
"Looks like we missed the fun," Kyle said, flashing a tired grin.
"Fun isn't the word I'd use," Claire muttered, leaning heavily on her dagger.
As we left the cave, the ward's light guiding our way, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. We were one step closer to defeating the darkness, and with Van, Claire, and even Kyle by my side, I knew we could face whatever came next.
But deep down, I also knew that Malric wasn't finished—not yet. This was just the beginning.
