The air at the top of the Forbidden Watchtower felt thick, pressing against the group as if the weight of countless unseen eyes bore down on them. The spiral staircase opened into a massive circular chamber, its walls lined with enormous windows that looked out onto the desolate lands of the Western Kingdom. Above them, the ceiling was adorned with glowing constellations, shifting and pulsating as though alive.
In the center of the room stood a pedestal, upon which rested a black orb encased in intricate golden patterns. Dark energy radiated from the orb, pulsating with an eerie rhythm. The whispers they had heard throughout the tower were now a deafening roar, emanating from the orb as if it contained countless trapped souls.
"That's it," Lin Xuan said, his voice firm but quiet. "The source of the tower's power."
Elder Mo's expression darkened. "That's no ordinary artifact. It's a soul nexus—a vessel that traps and absorbs the souls of the fallen. Destroying it won't be easy."
Zhao Yue frowned, his spear at the ready. "Nothing in this tower has been easy. What's stopping us from smashing it right now?"
Ji Mei's gaze didn't leave the orb. "If it's tied to the tower, destroying it might collapse everything—including us."
---
Lin Xuan stepped closer to the pedestal, his senses sharp. The whispers grew louder, merging into distinct voices that seemed to claw at his mind.
"Lin Xuan..." a voice called, soft yet chilling.
He froze, his hand instinctively tightening around his sword. "Did anyone else hear that?"
"Hear what?" Li Fengxian asked, her daggers glinting in the faint light.
"Voices," Lin Xuan replied, his gaze narrowing at the orb. "It knows my name."
Elder Mo stepped beside him, his brows furrowing. "It's trying to get into your mind. Focus your energy and resist. If you let it in, it will use your thoughts against you."
---
As Lin Xuan steadied himself, the whispers shifted again, this time targeting the others.
"Zhao Yue, you will fail. You've always been too reckless."
"Ji Mei, you'll never be strong enough to protect the people you care about."
"Li Fengxian, your loyalty is a weakness. They'll abandon you when you're no longer useful."
Each voice was insidious, striking at the core of their insecurities. Ji Mei flinched, clutching her staff tightly. Zhao Yue growled in frustration, while Li Fengxian's face darkened, her grip on her daggers trembling.
"Stop listening to it!" Lin Xuan barked, his voice cutting through the whispers. "It's lying. Focus on your strength, not your doubts!"
His words broke the spell, and the others straightened, their expressions hardening.
---
Elder Mo studied the orb, his expression grave. "This artifact is no mere weapon. It's an anchor for something far worse. Destroying it will release a tremendous amount of energy—and we'll have to face whatever it unleashes."
"Then we don't have a choice," Lin Xuan said, stepping forward. "We can't leave this thing here to keep corrupting the land."
Zhao Yue smirked, rolling his shoulders. "Finally, some action. Let's break this thing and see what happens."
"Be ready for anything," Ji Mei warned, her staff glowing with power.
---
Lin Xuan raised his sword, the blade shimmering with silver light. "On my mark. Focus your attacks on the orb as soon as I strike."
As the group readied their weapons, the orb pulsed violently, and the room trembled. The whispers turned into screams, and shadows began to seep from the orb, coalescing into monstrous forms with glowing red eyes.
"Here they come!" Li Fengxian shouted, leaping into action.
Zhao Yue charged at one of the shadow creatures, his spear crackling with energy as he thrust it into the beast. Ji Mei unleashed a barrage of fireballs, each one illuminating the room with a brilliant flash as it struck the shadows.
Lin Xuan didn't hesitate. He dashed toward the orb, his sword glowing brighter with each step. The shadows swarmed him, but he cut through them with precision, his movements fluid and controlled.
"Keep them off him!" Elder Mo yelled, slamming his staff into the ground. A golden barrier surrounded the group, repelling the shadows momentarily.
---
Reaching the pedestal, Lin Xuan focused all his energy into his sword. The blade burned with an intense light as he brought it down on the orb. The room erupted in a blinding explosion of energy, the force of the impact sending everyone flying backward.
When the light faded, the shadows were gone, and the orb was shattered, its fragments scattered across the floor.
"It's done," Lin Xuan said, rising to his feet.
But before they could relax, the ground beneath them began to shake violently. Cracks spread across the walls, and the constellations on the ceiling flickered erratically.
"The tower's collapsing!" Ji Mei shouted.
---
"Everyone, move!" Elder Mo commanded, leading the charge down the staircase. The group sprinted downward as the tower crumbled around them, debris falling and the air growing thicker with dust.
Lin Xuan pushed himself to the limit, making sure no one fell behind. As they reached the base of the tower, the entrance burst open, and they dove outside just as the structure collapsed in a deafening roar.
They lay on the ground, breathing heavily, as the dust settled.
"That was too close," Zhao Yue muttered, sitting up.
Elder Mo nodded, his expression grim. "We've destroyed the nexus, but this is only the beginning. The Western Kingdom won't take this lightly."
Lin Xuan stared at the rubble, his mind racing. "Whatever was powering that tower, it wasn't just local magic. There's something much bigger at play here."
---
As the group regrouped, the winds shifted, carrying with them an ominous chill. Lin Xuan looked toward the horizon, where dark clouds were gathering.
"The storm is far from over," he thought. "But no matter what lies ahead, we'll be ready."
With resolve burning brighter than ever, they set off toward their next destination, leaving the ruins of the Forbidden Watchtower behind.
