Chapter 52: "Item Appraisal" – Attributes of Four Magical Items

Three days ago, Lyle had already raised his "Genius" Class to level eight, which meant he had finally met the requirements to use Tier 2 magic.

Most importantly, the Tier 2 spell he had been eager to acquire—"Item Appraisal"—was now within his grasp.

However!

With Tier 2 magic came higher MP consumption. This spell required 10 MP per use.

Lyle's MP pool was still too low, allowing him to cast only one Tier 2 spell at a time. Even with natural MP regeneration, he could only use it twice per day at best!

Because of this limitation, it had taken him two full days to fully appraise the magical items he had previously obtained.

With the "Item Appraisal" spell, Lyle was finally able to identify the true nature of these four magic items.

Among them, the Mithril Dagger was the least useful to him due to his current fighting style, but the other three were highly practical.

The most valuable item by far was the Mystic Staff.

Even Lyle was somewhat surprised by its MP Regeneration effect.

Though a mere 5% MP regeneration might seem insignificant, such an ability was extremely rare and valuable.

In fact, a magical item with this property would easily be worth over 1,000 gold coins!

In the game "YGGDRASIL," HP recovery items like healing potions existed.

However, unlike many other games, MP recovery potions did not exist.

For spellcasters, MP was their lifeline. Without MP, they became completely powerless.

Because of this, every spellcaster sought after equipment that could enhance MP regeneration.

In "YGGDRASIL," different class restrictions prevented players from equipping weapons or gear that didn't match their profession.

Even after "Nazarick Underground Tomb" was transported into this world, Ainz and his followers still retained these strict game-based equipment restrictions.

However…

The people of this world did not have such limitations.

Even a magic caster could wield a short sword or draw a bow.

Lyle was no exception. The "Appraise Item" skill's identification of "class restrictions" did not actually impose a limitation on him.

Under these circumstances, the fact that Appraise Item could even detect "class restrictions"—which was not a concept native to this world—suggested that the information it provided was influenced by the user's own understanding.

At this moment, Lyle had mastered two new Tier 2 spells, in addition to Appraise Item.

To be precise, they were the same two spells he had previously learned at Tier 0.

Upon reaching a higher caster level, Heating and Papermaking had both acquired an "↑" marker, indicating that they could be upgraded.

He used a skill point on each, raising them both to Tier 2.

...

[Skill: Papermaking] (Tier 2) ↑

MP Cost: 10

Effect: Creates 700 sheets of high-quality paper.

...

[Skill: Heating] (Tier 2) ↑

MP Cost: 10

Effect: Instantly increases the temperature of a contacted surface to 100°C and sustains heating up to 300°C for one minute.

...

Both spells had undergone significant changes upon reaching Tier 2.

Especially Heating.

What was originally a simple life magic spell had now gained clear offensive potential.

A temperature of 100°C was enough to scald human skin, and prolonged exposure to 300°C could cause severe burns or even ignite flammable materials. While Tier 2 attack magic could also easily achieve this level of damage, what set Heating apart was its potential for growth.

More importantly, life magic like this did not belong to the YGGDRASIL system of spells. This meant that even the famed Nazarick Underground Tomb had no information on it.

Then there was Papermaking.

Instead of increasing the number of sheets it could produce, the upgrade had actually reduced the amount from 800 to 700.

Lyle furrowed his brows in thought.

With a flick of his wrist, he retrieved two sheets of paper from his inventory—one made using the Tier 1 spell and the other using the upgraded Tier 2 version.

At first glance, both looked pristine and white.

However, under sunlight, the second sheet exuded a faint sheen, almost imperceptible yet undeniably present.

"This glow… It looks familiar, but where have I seen it before?"

He couldn't quite place it.

After a brief moment of contemplation, Lyle cast Appraise Item on the new sheet of paper.

...

[Item: Material - White Paper] (Tier 2)

Rank: Lowest Grade

Effect: A sheet of paper infused with faint magical energy, resistant to damage. Writing on it will remain unchanged for a hundred years. — Alchemical Material

Description: White Paper.

...

Seeing the appraisal results, Lyle raised an eyebrow.

"Text written on this paper remains intact for a hundred years?"

He was genuinely surprised.

Books crafted from this material would essentially be "magical" books, and high-ranking nobles would likely be interested in such long-lasting records.

After a moment of thought, Lyle considered the possibility of selling this enchanted paper.

Wait a minute!

His eyes narrowed slightly. He recalled something Team Rock had mentioned before—some nobles already possessed books capable of preserving text for extended periods.

That meant this world already had a version of Tier 2 Papermaking!

However, when he visited the Magician's Guild in E-Rantel, the only spell scrolls available for purchase were for Tier 0 and Tier 1 Papermaking.

Of course, a frontier guild like this wouldn't openly sell Tier 2 spell scrolls.

In fact, even acquiring Appraise Item—a spell with no combat applications—had been difficult.

It was only after revealing his Faith Magic Caster identity that he had managed to purchase it.
