The glow of the molten streams faded into the background as Kai lay on the cracked ground, staring up at the swirling, stormy sky. His body ached in ways he hadn't thought possible, and the energy he'd unleashed earlier still pulsed faintly through his veins, like a distant echo. For a moment, he wondered if his limbs would even respond if he tried to move.
"You're going to need to recover faster than that," Ignis said, his voice cutting through the haze.
Kai turned his head slightly, squinting up at the dragon prince. Ignis stood nearby, his arms crossed, his golden eyes scanning the darkened terrain. Despite the exhaustion in his stance, he looked as unshakable as ever.
"Oh, sure," Kai muttered, his voice weak. "Let me just bounce back from almost dying twice in one day. No problem."
Ignis glanced down at him, his expression unreadable. "You didn't die. That's what matters."
Kai let out a bitter laugh, closing his eyes. "Right. Because that's such a high bar to clear."
The sound of Ignis stepping closer made him open his eyes again. The dragon crouched beside him, his gaze sharp. "You're still alive because of the fragment's power. But it's unstable. You're pulling magic without knowing how to control it. If you keep doing that, it'll kill you."
Kai sat up slowly, wincing as his muscles protested. "So what am I supposed to do? I didn't ask for this bond, or this magic, or... any of this." He gestured vaguely at the desolate landscape around them.
"No one asks for their fate," Ignis said, his tone quiet but firm. "But that doesn't mean you can run from it. The bond chose you, and now you have to decide whether to let it break you—or make you stronger."
Kai looked at him, searching for any hint of sympathy in his expression. There was none. Ignis was all sharp edges and conviction, and it frustrated Kai to no end.
"And what if I can't handle it?" Kai asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ignis's gaze softened, just slightly. "You can. You have to. Because if you don't, you're not the only one who will suffer. The bond ties you to something much bigger than yourself. If you fail, others will pay the price."
The weight of his words settled over Kai like a stone. He didn't fully understand the scope of what was happening, but he couldn't ignore the truth in Ignis's voice. Whatever this bond was, whatever the fragment had awakened in him, it wasn't something he could run from.
Kai pushed himself to his feet, swaying slightly as he stood. Ignis watched him but didn't offer help. Kai appreciated that, in a strange way.
"Fine," Kai said, his voice steadier now. "I'll figure it out. But you'd better teach me how to do more than just accidentally explode things."
Ignis smirked, a flicker of amusement crossing his face. "Fair enough. We'll start once we're out of the Veil."
Kai glanced around, the oppressive stillness of the Veil pressing down on him. "How far is that, exactly?"
Ignis's expression darkened. "Not far. But Amara's little game has likely alerted the other clans. The way out won't be easy."
Kai sighed, adjusting the strap of his messenger bag. "Because it's been such a cakewalk so far."

They moved cautiously through the Veil, the jagged path narrowing as they descended into a canyon-like crevice. The heat from the molten streams intensified, and the air grew thick with the acrid scent of sulfur and burning magic.
Kai kept close to Ignis, his eyes darting to every shadow. The memory of the shadow beasts still sent a shiver down his spine, and he wasn't eager to see what else the Veil might throw at them.
Ignis slowed, raising a hand to signal for Kai to stop. His golden eyes scanned the rocky walls of the crevice, his expression tense.
"What is it?" Kai whispered.
Ignis didn't answer immediately. Instead, he tilted his head, as if listening to something only he could hear. After a moment, he straightened, his jaw tightening. "We're being followed."
Kai's blood ran cold. "More enforcers?"
"Not enforcers," Ignis said grimly. "Something worse."
Before Kai could ask what he meant, a low growl echoed through the canyon. It was deep and resonant, vibrating through the ground beneath their feet. Kai froze, his heart pounding.
"What the hell was that?"
Ignis didn't answer. Instead, he turned, his body tensing as he stared down the path they'd just come from. A shadow moved at the edge of Kai's vision, too large and too fast to be one of the enforcers.
The growl came again, louder this time, and the shadows seemed to coalesce into a single massive shape. As it stepped into the faint glow of the molten streams, Kai felt his breath catch.
The creature was unlike anything he'd ever seen. It stood on four legs, its massive body covered in scales that shimmered like molten metal. Its eyes burned with an intense, otherworldly light, and its claws left deep gouges in the ground with every step.
"What is that?" Kai asked, his voice barely audible.
"A guardian beast," Ignis said, his voice low. "They're ancient protectors of the Veil, meant to keep intruders out. If it sees us as a threat, it won't stop until we're dead."
Kai swallowed hard, gripping the package tighter. "Okay, so... what do we do?"
Ignis's flames flared to life in his hands. "We survive."
