The Fractured Path

The Crimson Veil was behind them now, its storms subdued and the Guardian's trial passed. The leyline here pulsed steadily, its energy no longer chaotic, but restored—at least for now. Yet even as the group moved forward, the weight of their mission pressed down on them.

Kai could still feel the lingering energy of the Guardian flowing through him, like a tether connecting him more deeply to the leyline. The fragment, warm against his palm, had changed—its glow steadier, its pulses slower, more controlled.

But there was no time to reflect. Their next destination awaited.

"The Silver Hollow," Selene said as they trudged forward. "If the Ashen Order is heading there, we have to move fast."

"What's so important about this place?" Ignis asked, his golden eyes scanning the distant horizon. "The Guardian said the leyline was fractured there, but not lost. What does that even mean?"

Kai exhaled, feeling the fragment react to the name. "It means the node there is still connected to the leyline, but it's unstable. The Order is probably planning to corrupt it before it collapses completely."

Febe twirled a knife between her fingers. "So we're racing against time now? Great."

"We always were," Selene muttered.

Kai kept his focus forward. "We don't just have to get there first. We have to stop them from taking control."

That meant getting stronger.

Their path took them through the Cracked Lands, a region of rough terrain filled with jagged rock formations and deep ravines, remnants of past leyline disruptions. The air was heavy with residual magic, flickering between warmth and cold as unstable energy leaked from beneath the earth.

Kai could feel the ground humming beneath his feet, as if the leyline itself was whispering warnings.

"Careful where you step," Selene murmured. "This place is riddled with leyline tears. Fall into the wrong spot, and you might not make it back."

"I love this job," Febe muttered sarcastically.

Ignis huffed. "At least it's not another storm."

They pressed on carefully, navigating between shifting stones and avoiding patches where the air rippled with unstable energy. As they moved deeper, Kai noticed something off—the leyline pulses were inconsistent, skipping beats like an unsteady heartbeat.

Then, suddenly—

A loud crack echoed through the air.

Kai barely had time to react before the ground beneath them split apart, a deep fissure opening at their feet. The earth trembled violently, and a pulse of dark energy surged upward, sending out a shockwave that threw them backward.

Kai hit the ground hard, the fragment flaring in his hand.

"What the hell was that?" Ignis growled, pushing himself up, his flames already igniting in response.

Selene's eyes narrowed. "The leyline is reacting to something."

A moment later, Kai saw what.

Dark figures emerged from the fissure—void-infused constructs, their bodies woven with threads of corrupted leyline energy. Their glowing eyes locked onto the group, their movements sharp and unnatural.

"The Ashen Order left a welcome party," Febe muttered, already twirling her knives.

Kai could feel the fragment's pulse quicken. These weren't just random constructs—the Order had set them here, feeding off the fractured leyline.

Which meant one thing.

The Silver Hollow was already under attack.

---

The constructs moved fast, their limbs shifting like liquid shadows as they lunged forward.

Ignis was the first to react, unleashing a wave of fire that collided with the front line. The flames engulfed them, but instead of crumbling, the constructs absorbed the heat, their bodies pulsing with flickering dark veins.

Selene cursed. "They're leeching energy from the leyline!"

Kai barely dodged as one of the constructs lashed out, its clawed hand slicing through the air where he had stood a second ago. He countered, raising the fragment and letting its golden light surge forward.

The construct screeched, recoiling as the pure leyline energy burned through its void corruption.

"That's the key!" Selene shouted. "Kai, use the fragment! It disrupts their connection!"

Kai nodded, raising the fragment high. He focused, feeling the leyline's pulse through his body.

Then, he unleashed it.

A wave of golden energy radiated outward, clashing against the constructs and severing their connection to the leyline. Their forms shuddered, the corruption breaking apart like shattered glass.

Ignis grinned. "Now that's more like it."

With their link to the leyline cut, the constructs became slower, weaker. Febe darted in, her knives flashing as she took down two in quick succession. Selene followed suit, her void energy collapsing the last one into dust.

Kai exhaled, the fragment's glow dimming slightly now that the battle was over. The leyline was still unstable, but at least the immediate threat was gone.

"We don't have time for more fights," Selene said. "The node is close—we need to get there before they send more."

Kai nodded, gripping the fragment tightly. The Order was ahead of them. But they weren't out of time yet.

And he wouldn't let them win.

---

They reached the edge of the Hollow by nightfall.

The valley stretched before them, bathed in an eerie silver glow. The leyline's energy was visible, swirling like mist over the ruins of an ancient temple at the valley's center. The temple's pillars were cracked, its carvings worn by time, but the power emanating from it was undeniable.

The node was inside.

Kai could feel it—fractured, fragile, on the brink of collapse.

And surrounding it—

The Ashen Order.

Rows of soldiers, their armor glowing with corrupted runes, stood guard at the temple's entrance. At the center of them stood a figure cloaked in crimson, their presence radiating an aura of sheer dominance.

Selene stiffened. "That's not just a commander."

Kai swallowed hard. The fragment pulsed erratically in his hand. He could feel the leyline's fear—this wasn't just another battle.

This was a war for the leyline's future.

And they had just stepped into the heart of it.
