A faint flash in the sky caught their attention. Lyria tensed instantly, and Kael quickly pulled back the curtain. A shadow, dense as the night itself, vanished between the streets. Before they could relax, an overwhelming presence filled the room. A celestial light, pure and blinding, materialized before them, taking the form of an angel of imposing proportions. Its voice resonated like thunder.
ANGEL: "Beings from another world, cease your disruption of this realm's balance. Consider this your only warning."
Lyria instinctively stepped into a defensive stance, her eyes sharp and unwavering. But Kael raised a hand to stop her, his expression calm but firm.
KAEL: "Remember, Lyria, you're bound to a mortal body now. You wouldn't last a minute before it collapses."
The tension between them and the angel was palpable, as Lyria reluctantly relaxed her posture. Kael stepped forward, addressing the celestial being directly.
KAEL: "We have not used our powers, nor have we imposed our will upon any human. Every action we've taken has adhered to this world's natural order. Even the gift of this Codex was given freely, of their own accord."
The angel's gaze bore into Kael, scrutinizing every word as though weighing their truth. After a tense moment of silence, the celestial being softened its glow slightly but spoke once more.
ANGEL: "Tread carefully, for the balance of this realm is fragile. Any further interference will not be tolerated."
With that, the angel dissolved into light, leaving a lingering sense of unease in the room. As soon as it vanished, Kael turned to Lyria.
KAEL: "We need to be prepared. If angels or demons from this realm decide to attack us, we can't afford to be caught off guard."
Lyria gave a wry smile, crossing her arms.
LYRIA: "Don't worry. I've been working on something for that."
Kael raised an eyebrow, genuinely intrigued.
KAEL: "Oh? And what exactly is this 'something'?"
She reached into her bag, pulling out a compact, polished device glowing faintly with intricate engravings.
LYRIA: "It's a containment field generator. It won't stop a celestial being, but it can buy us precious seconds to retreat. I figured we might need some contingencies."
Kael's expression softened with admiration.
KAEL: "Always a step ahead. I shouldn't be surprised."
The faintest smirk played on Lyria's lips as she tucked the device back into her bag. But before either of them could speak further, a distant sound caught their attention—footsteps echoing in the street below, deliberate and measured.
Kael moved to the window, peering cautiously through the curtain.
KAEL: "We're not alone."
Lyria joined him, her expression tense.
LYRIA: "Blackmours?"
Kael shook his head slowly, his tone grave.
KAEL: "No. Someone else. Someone who knows about the Codex."
The two exchanged a grim look, their mission suddenly becoming far more complicated than they had anticipated.
Suddenly, the light from a nearby streetlamp flickered and went out. From the shadows, a figure emerged—a tall man in a dark coat, his face obscured by a wide-brimmed hat. His very presence seemed to make the air heavier, and the silence that followed was deafening.
MAN: "Kael. Lyria. I've been looking for you."
Kael tightened his grip on the curtain, his voice low and cautious.
KAEL: "And you are?"
The man tilted his head slightly, revealing a glimpse of pale, scarred skin under the brim of his hat.
MAN: "A concerned party. That Codex doesn't belong in your hands. Hand it over, and I'll spare you."
LYRIA: (stepping forward) "Bold of you to assume you can threaten us."
The man chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound that echoed unnaturally.
MAN: "You misunderstand. This isn't a threat. It's a promise."
Before Kael or Lyria could respond, the man raised a hand. A shadow surged from his feet, forming tendrils that lashed toward the building. The window shattered as Kael pulled Lyria back just in time.
KAEL: "Brace yourself."
The room erupted into chaos as the shadowy tendrils snaked through the air, destroying everything they touched. Lyria activated her containment device, creating a shimmering barrier around them. The tendrils struck the barrier, causing ripples of light to spread out like water.
LYRIA: (gritting her teeth) "This won't hold forever."
Kael stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the man outside.
KAEL: "Then let's end this quickly."
With a swift motion, Kael leapt through the broken window, landing gracefully on the street below. The man's shadows recoiled momentarily, as if surprised by his boldness.
MAN: "Impressive. But futile."
Kael didn't respond. Instead, he closed the distance between them in an instant, his movements calculated and precise. The two clashed, Kael's agility against the man's unearthly strength. Each blow sent shockwaves through the air, the sound of their battle echoing through the empty streets.
Meanwhile, Lyria watched from above, her mind racing. She glanced at the Codex on the table, then back at the fight. She couldn't shake the feeling that the man wasn't acting alone. There had to be more to this.
LYRIA: (to herself) "Think, Lyria. What's his real objective?"
Her thoughts were interrupted as the containment field flickered. The shadow tendrils were growing stronger, pressing against the barrier with relentless force.
LYRIA: (yelling) "Kael, we need to retreat!"
Kael dodged a strike that shattered the pavement beneath him and glanced up at her.
KAEL: "Not yet. I need answers."
The man smirked, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
MAN: "Answers? Then let me give you one."
He extended his hand, and the shadows around him began to coalesce into a massive, serpentine form. The creature roared, its eyes glowing with a malevolent light. Kael's expression hardened as he prepared for the next attack.
But before the shadow beast could strike, a blinding light erupted from the apartment above. Lyria stood at the broken window, the Codex open in her hands, its pages glowing with an otherworldly energy.
LYRIA: "You wanted the Codex? Let's see if you can handle its power."
The light from the Codex surged outward, engulfing the street in a radiant blaze. The shadow beast disintegrated with a pained screech, and the man staggered backward, shielding his face.
MAN: (hissing) "You have no idea what you're dealing with!"
LYRIA: (calmly) "Neither do you."
Kael took advantage of the distraction, closing the distance between him and the man. With a swift strike, he shattered the man's defenses, sending him crashing into a nearby wall.
As the dust settled, the man struggled to his feet, his hat now missing and his face fully revealed—a patchwork of scars and glowing symbols etched into his skin.
MAN: "This isn't over."
With a wave of his hand, the shadows enveloped him, and he vanished into the night. Kael looked up at Lyria, who was breathing heavily, the Codex still glowing faintly in her hands.
KAEL: "You okay?"
LYRIA: (nodding) "I'm fine. But this just got a lot more complicated."
Kael climbed back into the apartment, his gaze lingering on the Codex.
KAEL: "Whoever that was, they're not working alone. We need to figure out what this Codex really is—and fast."
Lyria closed the Codex, its glow fading.
LYRIA: "Agreed. But first, we need to make sure we're ready for whatever comes next."
The two exchanged a determined look, the weight of their mission heavier than ever.
As the first rays of dawn broke through the night, Kael and Lyria stood together, knowing that their journey had only just begun.
