Betrayal

Silas and Jake stood outside, their sharp glares clashing like swords drawn for battle.

“What’s going on?” I asked, turning to Ginevra as if he had the answers.

“I wish I knew,” he replied, watching the two curiously.

As we stepped out of the car, Jake was the first to approach, his expression softening the moment he saw me. Without a word, he pulled me into a hug.

A part of me flinched, instinctively wanting to step back. I wasn’t used to this kind of affection—especially from family. But knowing Jake, he probably needed this more than I did. So, I returned the embrace, albeit hesitantly.

“I need to talk to you,” he said in a shaky tone, his heartbeat thundering against my chest.

I pulled away slightly, glancing at Ginevra. “I’ll meet you inside.”

Ginevra nodded, his expression unreadable as I gave his hand a reassuring squeeze before leading Jake down the garden path.
