“Don’t worry about him,” Orpheus said softly with a dismissive tone.

I nodded but stood abruptly. “Please excuse me.” Without waiting for a response, I followed after Damien, my steps hurried even though I felt a bit hesitant.

Outside, it was a lovely cool night. I scanned the area, trying to catch any sign of him. A faint scent lingered in the breeze, guiding me. I followed it until I saw him standing in the shadow of the trees, his back stiff in a defensive posture.

“I don’t understand why you hate me so much,” I said softly as I approached. I was still a bit far but I knew he could hear me.

Damien stepped out from the shadows, and regarded me with a blank expression. “Why did you follow me? Not afraid I’ll kill you?” His tone was icy, but beneath it, I detected a hint of doubt, maybe even fear.

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “You could try, but you’d only be digging your own grave. I’m determined to stay alive these days.”
