Chapter 6

After leaving the infirmary, Evelyn returned to class, only to resume her daily routine of enduring bullying and insults. Despite the torment, she held onto one bright hope—today was the day she would propose to Edward. As soon as classes ended, she eagerly searched for him. Having missed their usual morning meeting due to her visit to the infirmary, Evelyn was filled with anticipation.

Spotting Edward with his friends, John and Luke, Evelyn approached him with a hopeful smile, asking if they could speak in private. Edward, however, rejected her request with cold indifference, showing no regard for her feelings. Although John and Luke encouraged Edward to hear her out, Evelyn, not wanting to cause trouble, dismissed the idea and decided to express her feelings then and there.

“I love you,” Evelyn confessed with a gentle smile. “I’ve loved you since childhood. You were my first friend, and somehow, I fell in love with you. When you’re sad, I want to comfort you; when you’re angry, I want to calm you. You’re the first person I think about every morning and the last one I think of every night. You showed me that there’s good in the world when no one else did. I love you, Edward, and I hope you’ll accept my gifts.” With that, she handed him a bouquet of lavender and a carefully wrapped present.

Edward took the flowers and gift slowly, and for a moment, Evelyn’s smile grew even brighter. But then, her happiness shattered as Edward tossed the bouquet and gift to the ground, stomping on them with a sneer. “Did you really think I’d accept these worthless things?” he mocked. His words cut deeper as he shouted, calling her a “shameless slut” for daring to confess her love. As students gathered around, some pitied her, while others were delighted, even recording the scene to share online.

Edward’s cruel words continued to rain down on Evelyn, branding her as an “eyesore” and “clingy bitch,” unworthy of even standing before him. He jeered at the idea that she believed he could care for her when her own family didn’t. Evelyn, devastated, tried to defend her belief that her family loved her, but doubts began to creep in. Before she could process these thoughts, Edward announced to the entire university that she wasn’t an orphan, but the “unwanted daughter” of her parents, someone not even her own family acknowledged.

Tears streamed down Evelyn’s face as she desperately insisted that her love for him was genuine. But Edward ruthlessly mocked her, claiming that her so-called love made him want to puke, that she was so ugly and disgusting he couldn’t stand the sight of her. He even wondered aloud why his father and brother cared for her at all. Turning to the crowd, Edward asked if they wanted to know what he truly thought of Evelyn, and they eagerly shouted yes.

John and Luke, who had left earlier to give them privacy, returned just in time to witness Edward’s vicious tirade. They tried to stop him, but Edward ignored them, launching into a cruel diatribe. “Evelyn is a spoiled, unwanted, useless, gold-digging, bratty bitch,” he declared. Evelyn, heartbroken, refused to believe that Edward could think of her that way, but he coldly confirmed every word.

With a heavy heart, Evelyn promised to never bother him again, bowing and apologizing before turning to leave. Though surprised by her grace, Edward couldn’t resist taunting her, predicting that she would come running back to him like a dog the next day. Despite the pain, Evelyn managed a sad smile and wished him a good day before walking away, her heart shattered.

As Evelyn disappeared from view, Edward felt a strange ache in his chest, a fleeting urge to stop her, but he quickly brushed it aside. His thoughts were interrupted when John, furious, landed a powerful punch on Edward’s face, demanding to know why he had spoken such lies about Evelyn. John’s usually calm demeanour made his anger even more shocking, leaving Edward stunned.

Luke stepped in to calm John, but he too expressed his disappointment, calling Edward out for his arrogance. “You think you’re always right because your mom says so, but no one is more wrong than you,” Luke snapped. As they walked away, Luke warned Edward to grow up before he lost something—or someone—precious.

Still in shock, Edward ignored their words, clinging to his belief that he was in the right. Just then, his girlfriend Lily Shen arrived, clinging to him and accusing him of cheating after hearing rumours about him and Evelyn. Edward quickly denied it and explained the situation, but Lily, feigning concern, suggested his words might have been too harsh. Edward dismissed her suggestion, insisting that Evelyn deserved every word.

Eager to move on, Edward proposed they go on a date, but Lily reminded him of an important meeting about their company’s collaboration. As they left for the company, Lily secretly thought about how foolish Edward was, planning to leave him as soon as she found someone richer and scheming to eliminate Evelyn, whom she saw as a potential future threat.
