Chapter 137 - Heroes Assemble—Target: Mythical Legends!
Daredevil, also known as Matt Murdock, has a past shaped by both tragedy and fate. As a child, Matt saved an elderly man from an oncoming truck loaded with hazardous chemicals. Unfortunately, Matt was exposed to radioactive material during the rescue, causing him to lose sight. However, this misfortune turned into a blessing, as it enhanced his remaining senses, and under the strict training of the blind martial arts master, Stick, Matt honed his abilities and became a formidable warrior.
Matt's journey to becoming a superhero wasn't solely due to his newfound powers. After his father, a boxer, was killed by the mob for refusing to throw a fight, Matt vowed to seek justice. Despite excelling at Columbia University's law program, he found the legal system inadequate to avenge his father's death. Fueled by rage, Matt used his powers to exact revenge, thus beginning his path as the hero Daredevil.
Like many superheroes, Matt led a double life. By day, he was a brilliant lawyer, defending the innocent, while by night, he donned the mask of Daredevil, protecting New York's Hell's Kitchen from crime.
Upon returning home, Matt switched out of his Daredevil suit and dressed in a sharp suit. After a quick cleanup, he headed to his law office, which he co-owned with his best friend.
His secretary and girlfriend, Karen Page, was surprised to see him. "Matt, didn't you say you were too busy to come by today?"
Unbeknownst to Karen, Matt had been hiding his Daredevil identity from her, though she had started to suspect something.
Smiling, Matt quickly came up with an excuse and then asked, "Karen, could you help me look up some information on someone?"
Karen, sensing Matt had something on his mind but not wanting to press him, smiled and replied, "Of course! Who is it?"
Matt didn't hesitate. "His name is Gilgamesh."
As he paused, a thought occurred to him, and he added, "He might be a king from some country."
Karen, upon hearing the name Gilgamesh, also felt it was familiar but couldn't quite place it. Without overthinking it, she began searching the computer.
It didn't take long for Karen to find the name and match it with a well-known historical figure. Her eyes widened in recognition. "That explains why the name sounded so familiar—Gilgamesh is known as the oldest hero king in human history."
Matt was momentarily taken aback. "Oldest hero king? What do you mean?"
Karen, reading from the screen, recited the information aloud.
"Gilgamesh, the fifth king of the city-state Uruk, ruled around the 27th century B.C. According to Mesopotamian mythology, Gilgamesh was two-thirds god and one-third human, possessing immense strength and divine attributes."
"He's also the central figure of the ancient epic poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and is often referred to as the oldest hero in human history."
Matt stood frozen, his mind racing. Rationally, he knew that the Gilgamesh he was searching for couldn't possibly be the same ancient hero from over six thousand years ago. Yet, his instincts told him otherwise—this was the Gilgamesh he was looking for.
Karen continued reading from the translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh:
"He who has seen everything, I will make known to the lands."
"He has learned of all things, he has seen the secrets of the world."
"He built the walls of Uruk, a city whose fame shall never die."
Matt finally interrupted, "Wait, Karen, hold on." He then asked, "Can you try finding any living king named Gilgamesh?"
Karen, though slightly confused, complied and searched again. After a few minutes, she shook her head. "I couldn't find anyone currently alive with that name."
Matt frowned in thought. After a moment, he said, "Karen, could you print all the information you found about this Hero King Gilgamesh? Make multiple copies. I have some things to take care of, but I'll come back for them later."
Understanding that Matt had something weighing on his mind, Karen refrained from asking more questions. She simply nodded and said, "Alright."
Matt kissed her gently on the forehead before swiftly leaving the office.
He found a nearby payphone and began making calls.
"Master Stick, it's Matt. Are you in Queens right now? Good, can you come to my place? I need your help with something important."
"Spidey, it's Matt. Can you come to my place? I know you've got school, but this is serious. Just get here as soon as you can."
"Frank—it's Matt. You're still in New York, right? Can you swing by my place? I need a hand."
"Wade—where are you? Pennsylvania? What are you doing there? Alright, well, I need your help. Can you head back to New York? Great, I'll be waiting."
"Natasha, I have something you might be interested in. If you want the details, come to my place."
"No, don't misunderstand. I'm not flirting with you! Just get here soon—I've invited some others, too."
After finishing his calls, Matt let out a sigh of relief. He had contacted everyone he thought could help.
Returning to the office, Matt grabbed Karen's printed documents and headed straight home.
His instincts flared when he entered his house, and he swiftly caught a blind staff aimed at his head. He sidestepped a kick and seamlessly engaged in combat with his master, Stick.
This was Stick's way of testing Matt's combat readiness.
Not far away, hidden in the shadows, Natasha Romanoff watched the sparring session with interest. Though she was a skilled fighter herself, well-versed in martial arts, Natasha knew that Daredevil's heightened senses made him a formidable opponent.
Natasha didn't know Stick personally, but she had heard about Matt's blind martial arts mentor and was curious to see his abilities firsthand.
Luckily, Matt's house was isolated enough that no one called the cops due to the commotion.
"Woo-hoo!" A loud yell suddenly echoed, causing both Matt and Stick to pause their fight.
Natasha turned toward the noise and spotted a red-suited figure rapidly descending from the sky. Recognizing him instantly, she thought, Spider-Man.
While Spider-Man's true identity was still a mystery, Natasha's organization had been working on uncovering it.
Before she could reflect further, a pickup truck pulled up in front of the house. The driver, a muscular man in a skull-printed t-shirt, locked eyes with Natasha, sending a chill down her spine.
It was Frank Castle, aka the Punisher.
Frank didn't have superpowers, but his combat skills were on par with the best. He had earned the title of a Level 10 SHIELD agent, marking him as one of the most lethal humans alive.
Frank wasn't sure who Natasha was, but he had noticed her watching Matt, and his instincts told him she might be dangerous. His eyes bore into her, cold and calculating.
Natasha, not one to back down, introduced herself. "Punisher, don't misunderstand. Daredevil asked me to come."
Frank, still wary, responded, "Fine. Let's head over together."
As they walked, Frank's hands remained casually in his pockets, but Natasha knew better. He was ready to strike at a moment's notice. She could feel the tension in the air, knowing that Frank wouldn't hesitate to attack if she made one wrong move.
Fortunately, Matt sensed their arrival and called out to them, breaking the tension.
Once everyone had gathered in Matt's living room, Stick was the first to speak. "Matt, why did you bring us here?"
Natasha, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), and Frank all looked to Matt, eager to hear what had prompted this gathering of heroes.
Though they had expected a serious matter, none of them anticipated what Matt would reveal.
"I'm sure you all know that my archenemy is Kingpin," Matt began.
The others nodded. They were all familiar with Kingpin's reputation as the most powerful crime boss in the U.S.
Matt continued, his tone heavy, "Earlier today, Kingpin was subjugated."
At these words, the atmosphere in the room shifted. Natasha, Stick, and Frank all exchanged shocked looks. They knew Kingpin was not someone who would submit easily.
Only Peter seemed confused, asking, "Who subdued him?"
Matt distributed the information he had gathered on Gilgamesh, explaining, "The one who subdued Kingpin is called Gilgamesh."
He handed the documents to the group. "Here's everything I found on him. You should take a look."
While Stick, being blind, didn't receive any papers, he trusted that the others would fill him in soon.
As they skimmed through the documents, Peter blurted out, "Wait, Mr. Murdock, this can't be right! This Gilgamesh is from mythology! Isn't he just a figure from an ancient epic? He would've lived thousands of years ago—there's no way he's still alive."
Natasha and Frank shared Peter's skepticism.
Stick frowned, sensing that Matt wasn't one to make mistakes like this.
Matt, anticipating their doubts, replied, "I don't know if they're the same, but the man who took control of Kingpin's empire calls himself Gilgamesh—and he refers to himself as 'the King.'"
"My instincts tell me that this Gilgamesh is indeed the Hero King from the ancient epics!"
The room fell into a tense silence as they all processed this revelation.
The ancient hero, Gilgamesh, had seemingly returned.
