Gabriel stood frozen, staring at the twisted reflection of himself. The shadow moved with an eerie fluidity, mirroring his stance but exaggerating it. Its wings were jagged, its robes tattered, and its eyes burned like molten gold.
"You can't escape me," the shadow repeated, taking a step closer.
Gabriel swallowed hard, his mind racing. Was this the trial? To face a corrupted version of himself?
"Wow, Gabe," Lily said, leaning against a non-existent wall. "Didn't know you had a dark side. I kinda like it."
"Stay out of this, Lily," Gabriel snapped, not taking his eyes off the shadow.
"Sure, sure," she said, holding up her hands in mock surrender. "I'll just sit back and enjoy the show. This is way better than Heaven's choir practice."
The shadow chuckled, its voice echoing unnaturally. "You're weak, Gabriel. Always have been. That's why you fell so easily."
"I didn't fall," Gabriel said through gritted teeth. "I was tricked."
The shadow's grin widened. "Keep telling yourself that. But deep down, you know the truth. You weren't perfect. You never were."
Gabriel's hands curled into fists. "I don't have to listen to you. You're nothing but a reflection—an illusion."
"An illusion?" said the shadow, spreading its wings. The chamber seemed to darken further as he spoke. "I'm everything you've buried. Your doubts, your fears, your arrogance."
Lily strolled closer, her curiosity piqued. "Wow, Gabe, he's really hitting you where it hurts. What are you gonna do? Cry? Because I could use a good laugh."
Gabriel ignored her, stepping forward. The air grew heavier with each step, as though the weight of the shadow's words pressed down on him. Even Lily felt it somehow, though admitting it was far beyond her capability.
"If this is my trial, then so be it." He said. "I won't let a distorted version of myself define who I am."
The shadow tilted its head. "Bold words. But words won't save you."
The ground beneath them began to tremble, and cracks of light spread across the floor, forming a glowing circle around the shadow. It extended a hand toward Gabriel, its voice soft but commanding. "Join me. Embrace what you fear most. Embrace your true self. Find what you seek through us."
Gabriel hesitated, his mind warring with itself. What did the trial mean by embrace what you fear most? The thought of merging with this twisted version of himself was repulsive, yet...
"You're actually considering it?" Lily's voice broke through his thoughts, incredulous. "Come on, Gabe, don't tell me you're falling for the spooky bad guy speech."
He turned to her, his expression conflicted. "You wouldn't understand."
"Try me," she said, crossing her arms.
Gabriel sighed. "It's not about joining him. It's about facing what I've avoided my entire existence—the fact that I'm not perfect. That even I... make mistakes."
Lily stared at him for a moment, uncharacteristically quiet. Then she smirked. "Wow, Gabe, you're really having a moment here. Let me know when it's over so we can get back to you not getting your halo."
The shadow chuckled again. "She's right, you know. This isn't about your halo, or your self-righteous angle status. It's about... survival."
Without warning, the shadow lunged, its fiery eyes locking onto Gabriel's. He barely had time to react, raising his arms to block as the shadow's claws slashed at him. The force sent him stumbling backward.
"Now this is what I'm talking about!" Lily said, stepping to the side to avoid the chaos. "Go, shadow-Gabe! Take him down!"
Gabriel gritted his teeth, summoning all the resolve he could muster. He wasn't armed—his celestial blade had been stripped from him along with his halo—but he refused to back down.
He charged forward, meeting the shadow head-on. Their clash sent shockwaves through the chamber, causing the runes on the walls to flare brightly. Gabriel was the only one left scraping across the stone floors of the shine. His body ached, still he pushed himself onto his stomach, slowly yet painfully climbing to his feet.
"You can't win!" the shadow snarled, its voice layered with malice.
"I don't need to win," Gabriel said, struggling to hold his ground. "I just need to prove I'm not afraid of you."
The words seemed to resonate within the chamber. The light grew brighter, and the shadow recoiled slightly, its form flickering.
Lily tilted her head, intrigued. "Huh. So bravery is, like, a cheat code in this place? Neat."
Gabriel pressed forward, his voice steady. "I've made mistakes. I let my pride blind me. But that doesn't mean I'm unworthy."
The shadow hissed, its form shrinking. "You're weak," it said, its voice losing its edge.
"And that's okay," Gabriel said, his voice softening. "Because weakness doesn't define me. What I do next does."
The light from the runes pulsed, engulfing the shadow. It let out a final scream before dissolving into mist, leaving the chamber silent once more.
Gabriel stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily. The glowing circle beneath him faded, replaced by a small, glowing shard that floated in the air.
"What's this?" Lily asked, plucking the shard before Gabriel could react.
"Lily!" Gabriel snapped.
She held it up, inspecting it. "Relax, Gabe. I'm just making sure it's not cursed or something. This is a trial, after all."
"Give it back," he demanded.
She smirked but handed it over. "Fine. But if it explodes, don't say I didn't warn you."
Gabriel took the shard, feeling its warmth spread through his palm. It wasn't his halo, but it just might be a step closer.
As they exited the chamber, the forest seemed darker than before. Gabriel clutched the shard tightly, his determination renewed.
Lily, walking beside him, tilted her head. "So... what now? You gonna sulk until the next trial?"
Gabriel shot her a look. "Why are you still here?"
"Because watching you is my new favorite hobby," she said with a grin.
He sighed, looking up at the sky. "I'll reclaim my halo. No matter what."
"And I'll make sure you don't... no matter what, " Lily added cheerfully.
Above them, a pair of glowing eyes watched from the shadows, accompanied by a low, rumbling chuckle.
