The glow from the crater bathed Alexia's face in an unearthly blue light as she crouched behind a fallen tree, her heart pounding against her ribcage. She could feel it now--a strange energy emanating from the crater, thick and oppressive, pulling at her like a magnet.
The system chimed in her mind:
[Warning: Unidentified lifeform detected within the vicinity.]
Her grip tightened on her machete as her eyes darted around the twisted forest. "Show me," she whispered.
A translucent map appeared in her mind's eye, highlighting a figure moving toward her position. Their movements were precise, calculated---this wasn't an infected, she was sure of it, this figure moved like a hunter.
"System," she muttered, "analyze the lifeform."
[Analysis: Human. Skill level: High. Threat level: Severe. Recommended action: Evade or Eliminate.]
The figure stepped into the faint glow of the crater; their face partially obscured by a black hood. They carried a sleek, custom-made rifle slung over their shoulder, she could see a knife strapped to their thigh and she was sure they had one in their boots.
Alexia didn't move, her breathing shallow as she observed them. They were scanning the area, their posture radiating confidence and control. Whoever they were, they weren't here by accident
The figure's voice broke the silence, deep and resonant. "I know you're out there," he said, his tone calm but menacing. "No point in hiding. Come out, and we'll talk. Or don't---and I'll find you anyway."
Alexia's tactical awareness flared, warning her that staying put was no longer an option. Quietly, she slipped away from her hiding spot, keeping low and using the twisted terrain for cover.
The figure or rather the hunter moved with unsettling precision, his eyes scanning the shadows. "You're good," he said, as if speaking directly to her. "But I'm better."
Her pulse quickened. She needed to create distance, but the closer she got to the crater, the more the oppressive energy seemed to weigh her down.
"System," she whispered, "any suggestions?"
[Recommendation: Use the terrain to your advantage. Lure the hunter into a vulnerable position.]
Alexia smirked. "That, I can do."
She picked up a rock and hurled it into the bushes to her left. The sound drew the hunter's attention, and he moved toward it with silent efficiency.
As he approached the bushes, Alexia circled behind him, her machete in hand. She was just a few steps away when he stopped suddenly, his head tilting as if he sensed her presence.
"Clever," he said, turning to face her with a cold smile. "But not clever enough."
He moved like lightning, drawing his knife in one smooth motion. Alexia barely had time to react, her machete clashing against his blade with a metallic screech.
The hunter was strong, his strikes precise and relentless. Alexia's combat mastery skill kicked in, allowing her to deflect his attacks and counter with her own.
"What are you?" he growled, his eyes narrowing as he studied her movements. "No ordinary survivor fights like this."
"Wouldn't you like to know," she snapped, delivering a sharp kick to his midsection that sent him stumbling back.
The system chimed:
[Combat skill proficiency increased. Calculating optimal strike pattern.]
A series of potential moves flashed in her mind, and she acted on instinct, swing her machete in a fluid arc. The hunter barely dodged, a cut appearing on his arm.
His smile widened, almost feral. "This just got interesting."
He lunged at her with renewed vigor, but Alexia was ready. Using her enhanced agility, she sidestepped his attack and delivered a powerful strike to his wrist, disarming him.
The knife clattered to the ground, and Alexia pressed the machete against his throat.
"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice cold. "And why are you here?"
The hunter raised his hands in surrender, his expression calm despite the blade at his neck. "Name's Quinn," he said smoothly. "I'm a tracker. Came here to investigate this anomaly, same as you."
Alexia didn't lower her weapon. "Why were you hunting me?"
"Wasn't hunting you," he replied, his tone annoyingly nonchalant. "You just happened to cross my path. Call it curiosity."
"Curiosity could've gotten you killed."
"Likewise," he said with a smirk.
Alexia's grip on her machete tightened, but she couldn't ignore the fact that he hadn't actually tried to kill her. Yet.
"Fine," she said, stepping back and lowering her weapon slightly. "But if you try anything, I won't hesitate."
"Fair enough," Quinn said, rubbing his wrist where she'd struck him. "You've got skills. I respect that."
"Don't flatter me."
He chuckled. "So, what's your plan? Because whatever's causing that glow isn't going to wait forever."
Alexia glanced toward the crater, the blue light casting eerie shadows on the twisted trees. She didn't trust Quinn, but having an extra pair of eyes, even untrustworthy ones might be useful.
"For now, we work together," she said. "But this is temporary."
"Understood," Quinn said with a nod. "Lead the way."
As they approached the crater, the oppressive energy grew stronger, making every step feel like a battle. The ground beneath their feet was cracked and blackened, radiating an unnatural heat.
Quinn studied the area, his expression serious for the first time. "This isn't natural," he muttered. "Whatever's down there.... its dangerous.
Alexia didn't respond, her focus on the swirling light at the center of the crater. She could feel the system reacting to it, though it remained uncharacteristically silent.
"System," she said quietly, "What is this?"
[Analyzing.... Unable to determine. Energy signature is unlike anything in current database.]
"That's helpful," she muttered.
Quinn glanced at her. "Talking to yourself?"
"Don't worry about it," she snapped.
He smirked but didn't press the issue.
As they reached the edge of the crater, a low rumble shook the ground, and the light pulsed brighter. Alexia and Quinn exchanged a wary glance.
"This is a bad idea," he said.
"Probably," Alexia replied.
The light surged, and a deafening roar erupted from the crater, sending a wave of heat and force that knocked them both off their feet.
Alexia scrambled to her knees, her heart racing as a massive shadow emerged from the glowing abyss.
"System," she whispered, her voice trembling, "What the hell is that?"
[Warning: Entity identified as Tier-2 Predator. Type: Chimeric Wraith. Threat level: Extreme. Immediate action required.]
Quinn cursed under his breath. "I told you this was a bad idea."
Alexia tightened her grip on her machete, her eyes locked on the towering creature before them.
"Yeah," she said, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her. "But it's too late to back out now."
