Her breath hitched in her throat.
The child floated, suspended in the liquid, his small frame unnaturally still.
The child's face was eerily similar to the one she had met before, yet she knew they were not the same person because that child had been in the apocalypse outside, while this one was in here.
"System what's going on?"
Silence.
Alexia tried again, but the system wasn't answering, it was like its presence wasn't there. She brushed it off and focused on the child in the containment pod, her palm brushing it every so often.
Quinn moved towards Alexia; his brows furrowed. "Alexia, step back."
Alexia didn't. She pressed her palm against the reinforced glass, searching the child's face for any sign of awareness. "He's alive." Her voice sounded certain. "I can feel it."
Outside, the sound of banging was suddenly heard, "Uhh... guys I don't think this door can hold on for much longer." Alex said, while tapping on his tablet.
"We have to move, Alex look for any escape route," Damien ordered, he walked towards Alexia, then put a hand on her shoulder, "Alexia we have to move."
Alexia didn't budge, she walked around the containment pod, looking for a way to bring the child out, behind the containment pod were plugs and switch.
"Does anybody know how to work this thing?" She asked.
Quinn and Damien shook their heads, while Devon walked towards her.
"Why do you need to bring him out?" He questioned.
Alexia didn't answer, how was she supposed to explain that she felt some sort of calling or instincts towards him, it was different from how she felt towards Alex, but the instinct was still there, and she always trusted her instincts.
Seeing as she didn't respond, Devon shrugged and began unplugging wires from the pod, "We'll need to test if he's used to oxygen first, because he's been submerged in liquid for a while."
Alexia nodded, her eyes watching as he unplugged some cords, then she watched as the water in the pod drained to a certain level before Devon plugged it back.
The child in it was fine, his skin though was extremely pale and
Devon continued to pull plugs after he verified that the child in it was fine.
After a while of pulling plugs, he stood up and walked towards the side of the pod, pressed a button and the pod opened.
The child which had been suspended in the liquid immediately fell forward as the remaining liquid in the pod rushed out, but Alexia was already there, and she caught him.
Damien who had been watching at the side, immediately removed his jacket and passed it to Alexia, which she used to cover him.
Base X, City??
In a large room underground, people in lab coats and military uniforms were seen running around, typing codes on the keyboard, the room filled with computers and a huge screen showing, the apocalypse in each city and the bases established, the footage for City Z was particularly larger specifically the research facility, outside the containment chamber.
A group of people hovered over a surveillance footage, watching as the creatures in it ran rampant, hitting on a particular door.
"What are these people doing, I asked you to pull up the surveillance in the Containment chamber." A man in a military uniform was angrily shouting at the top of his voice.
"I clearly specified that the facility be destroyed or removed to prevent those people from finding out anything, but none of you listened." A lady wearing a lab coat who looked similar to the man in the military uniform said.
A young soldier ran towards the lady and whispered something in her ear, whatever was said caused the lady's face to twist, the woman which was originally beautiful looked somewhat scary.
"They said something is blocking them from accessing the feed in the containment chamber, it must be SPARTA-290."
"I thought that thing was destroyed long ago?" Another man, this time around in a lab coat spoke up.
"It was, clearly we didn't do the job well because the only thing capable of doing that is SPARTA-290." She replied back.
The man in the military coat sighed, "Let's hope they don't find the important things."
City Z, Research facility, Containment chamber.
"Guys, we have good and bad news, which one would you want to hear first." Alex sighed out loud, he's face filled with exhaustion.
Alexia who was sitting on the ground holding the little child looked up, "Let's hear the bad news first."
"So there's no escape route out of this room but through that door."
Damien and Quinn looked at each other, while Devon kept looking at the child in Alexia's arm his face scrunched up.
"What's the good news?" Quinn asked.
"I've got all the files in the facility on my tablet." Alex grinned, raising his tablet up like a trophy.
Damien looked at Alex and then smiled, "Well that's good. Good job Alex."
This seemingly sweet doting moment was cut short by the repeated banging outside the door.
The creatures outside were all gathered at the door of the containment chamber, the one Alexia had fought with kept on repeatedly banging itself onto the door.
The door didn't last long against the creature repeated banging, as it was soon smashed open.
Alexia and the rest got into position; the child strapped on Alexia's back.
No one noticed that in that moment, the child on Alexia's back had woken up due to the noise not even Devon who had been watching him, as he was also looking at the door.
The child's eyes were hazy as if trying to recollect who and where he was, he watched the creature all file into the room and his eyes filled with hostility, raising his hand up, his palm facing towards the creatures, he watched as they all shriveled on the spot, all of them dying.
Back at Base X, the feed was cut off as soon as the creatures filed into the room.
Meanwhile, Alexia and the rest were confused, looking at the shriveled corpses on the floor, before looking at the tiny, outstretched arm beside Alexia's cheek.
Alexia feeling movement on her back, immediately unstrapped the child and put him on the floor, while also bending down at his eye level.
"Mom?"
