"We're making good progress," Arya said, scanning the map spread out before her. Her sharp eyes flicked to Ryan. "But we're not out of danger yet. The farther we go, the more likely we are to find something worse."
Ryan nodded, gripping the hilt of his sword. He was still getting used to the weight of his new level—both the physical and metaphorical responsibility. "What's our next move?"
Grent let out a low chuckle, slinging his hammer over his shoulder. "We follow the trail. That wraith wasn't here by chance. Something's driving these creatures deeper into the woods, and I'd bet my last coin it's not friendly."
Arya folded the map, tucking it into her pack. "Grent's right. These attacks aren't random. Something is pulling the strings, and we need to find out what."
The trio set off, their steps muffled by the damp forest floor. Ryan kept his eyes on his HUD, which displayed faint heat signatures ahead. The quiet was unnerving, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or distant bird calls. The forest felt alive in a way that was both mesmerizing and terrifying.
As they pressed on, the heat signatures grew stronger. The trail led them to a narrow ravine, its walls carved with strange runes that pulsed faintly. The air here was colder, and Ryan's breath misted in front of him.
"What is this place?" Ryan asked, running his fingers over one of the runes. The surface was smooth, almost unnaturally so.
Arya's brow furrowed. "These runes… they're ancient. Precursor tech, maybe. Whoever made them, they had power beyond anything we've seen."
Grent grunted. "Looks like a trap waiting to happen."
Ryan's HUD flashed a warning: Unstable Magic Detected. Proceed with Caution.
"Trap or not, it's the only way forward," Arya said, stepping into the ravine. "Stay close, and don't touch anything unless you have to."
The path wound deeper into the earth, the runes growing brighter with each step. The oppressive silence was broken by a faint hum, growing louder as they approached the end of the ravine. There, a massive door stood embedded in the rock, its surface covered in intricate carvings that seemed to shift and move as they watched.
"This is definitely Precursor tech," Arya said, her voice tinged with awe. "No one's seen anything like this in centuries."
Ryan stepped closer, his HUD scanning the door. A notification popped up: Sealed Door. Unlock Condition: Defeat the Gatekeeper.
"Gatekeeper?" Ryan said, glancing around. "I don't see—"
A deep, resonating growl cut him off. The ground beneath their feet trembled as a massive figure emerged from the shadows. It was humanoid, but its body was made entirely of stone, with glowing blue veins pulsing across its surface. Its eyes burned with an intense light, and a massive axe rested on its shoulder.
[Stone Sentinel] - Level 10
Grent let out a low whistle. "Well, this just got interesting."
Arya nocked an arrow, her eyes narrowing. "Ryan, focus on its legs. Grent, keep its attention on you. I'll aim for the core."
"Got it," Ryan said, his heart pounding as he tightened his grip on his sword.
The Stone Sentinel let out a deafening roar, its movements surprisingly fast for something so large. It swung its axe in a wide arc, forcing the trio to scatter. Grent charged forward, his hammer glowing as he activated a skill. The hammer struck the Sentinel's leg, sending cracks spidering across the stone.
"Over here, you big brute!" Grent bellowed, raising his shield just in time to block a retaliatory strike.
Arya's arrows flew true, each one striking the glowing veins on the Sentinel's chest. The creature roared in pain, its movements growing erratic.
Ryan darted in, activating [Quick Strike] to slash at the cracks Grent had created. His blade struck deep, and the Sentinel staggered, its axe crashing to the ground as it fell to one knee.
"Now!" Arya shouted, loosing an arrow that struck the core in its chest. The Sentinel let out a final roar before collapsing, its body crumbling into a pile of stone and light.
+200 XP. Level Up! (Ryan is now Level 6)
Ryan leaned on his sword, catching his breath. The door behind them began to glow, the carvings shifting to form a faint outline of a keyhole.
"Looks like we're on the right track," Arya said, stepping forward to examine the door. "But this is just the beginning. Whatever's behind this door, it's not going to be friendly."
Grent grinned, his hammer resting on his shoulder. "Good. I was starting to get bored."
Ryan managed a weak smile, the thrill of leveling up giving him a surge of confidence. "Let's open it. We didn't come this far to turn back now."
Arya nodded, her expression serious. "Then let's see what secrets the Precursors left behind."
With a deep breath, Ryan stepped forward, ready for whatever lay beyond the door.
