Kai sat at his desk, the dim glow of the desk lamp casting long shadows across the room. The woman's cryptic words replayed in his mind: "A life for a life."
His fist clenched, knuckles whitening as he stared at Doyle's journal spread out before him. The pages were filled with scrawled notes, sketches of the marks, and desperate theories. Yet, for all its information, it offered no definitive answers.
Ray walked in, two steaming mugs of coffee in hand. "Figured you could use this," he said, placing one on the desk.
Kai grunted his thanks, taking a sip. The bitterness matched the mood hanging over them.
"Any luck?" Ray asked, leaning against the edge of the desk.
Kai shook his head, flipping through the journal. "Doyle was close to something, but he didn't finish his work. Either he ran out of time, or he found something he didn't want to write down."
Ray frowned, his brow furrowing. "You think he knew about the 'life for a life' thing?"
Kai glanced up, his expression grim. "If he did, he didn't mention it here. But there's something else—he kept referencing an old ritual site, deeper in the forest. He called it the 'Heart of the Curse.'"
Ray raised an eyebrow. "The Heart of the Curse? Sounds like a great place for a death trap."
Kai smirked faintly, though it didn't reach his eyes. "It's our only lead. If there's any chance of finding a way to stop this without... sacrificing someone, it'll be there."
Ray sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "And let me guess—we're heading there tonight?"
Kai nodded. "The longer we wait, the more people die. The Harbinger isn't going to stop on its own."
---
By the time they reached the edge of the forest, the moon was high in the sky, casting a cold, silver light over the landscape. Kai and Ray parked their car and stepped out, their breath fogging in the frigid air.
"Got everything?" Kai asked, checking his flashlight and holstering his gun.
Ray patted the bag slung over his shoulder. "Flashlights, rope, extra ammo, and the journal. Let's just hope we don't need all of it."
Kai nodded and led the way into the woods, his boots crunching against the snow. The forest was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of nocturnal animals conspicuously absent.
As they walked, Kai's mind wandered back to the woman in the interrogation room. She had spoken with such certainty, as if the idea of sacrificing someone was a foregone conclusion. How many times has her Order done this before? he wondered.
A sudden crack of a branch snapped him out of his thoughts. He raised his flashlight, the beam cutting through the darkness.
"Relax," Ray said, though his own hand was on his gun. "Probably just the wind."
Kai didn't respond, his instincts on high alert. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
---
After what felt like hours, they reached a clearing. At the center stood a stone altar, weathered and covered in moss. Surrounding it were the same symbols they had seen in the basement of the farmhouse, etched into the ground in a circular pattern.
"The Heart of the Curse," Kai murmured, stepping closer.
Ray stayed a few steps behind, scanning the area with his flashlight. "Looks like it's been abandoned for a while. You think this is where the Order did their rituals?"
Kai knelt by the altar, running his fingers over the symbols carved into the stone. "Not just rituals. This is where it started. Doyle mentioned this place as the origin point of the curse. Whatever happened here centuries ago bound the Harbinger to the town."
Ray crouched beside him, studying the symbols. "So, if this is the origin, can we unbind it here?"
Kai pulled out Doyle's journal, flipping to a page where the altar was sketched in detail. "That's what I'm hoping. Doyle theorized that the marks act as a chain, anchoring the Harbinger to this world. If we disrupt the chain—"
A low growl interrupted him.
Both men froze, their hands instinctively reaching for their guns.
From the shadows at the edge of the clearing, two glowing eyes appeared. The Harbinger.
"It's here," Ray muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kai stood slowly, his gun drawn. "Stay close to the altar. If the marks are its anchor, it won't risk damaging them."
The Harbinger stepped into the clearing, its massive form illuminated by the moonlight. It was larger than Kai had remembered, its shadowy body shifting like smoke and fire.
Ray raised his gun, his flashlight trained on the creature. "What's the plan, Kai?"
Kai's mind raced. The Harbinger was a guardian, bound to protect the curse's secrets. If they wanted to disrupt the chain, they'd have to go through it.
"Hold your ground," Kai said, his voice steady. "We need to keep it distracted."
The Harbinger snarled and lunged, moving faster than seemed possible for something its size. Kai fired, the shots echoing through the clearing. Each bullet seemed to slow the creature, but it didn't stop.
Ray joined in, his shots precise and deliberate. The combined effort forced the Harbinger to pause, its glowing eyes narrowing as it assessed them.
Kai took the opportunity to move closer to the altar, his flashlight sweeping over the symbols. "There has to be a way to break these," he muttered, his heart pounding.
Behind him, Ray shouted, "Kai, it's coming back!"
Kai spun just in time to see the Harbinger charging again. He fired twice, aiming for its glowing eyes. The creature recoiled, a guttural roar escaping its throat.
Ray stepped forward, his flashlight trained on the beast. "Keep at it! The light's working!"
Kai nodded and grabbed a flare from Ray's bag, igniting it and tossing it toward the Harbinger. The red light flared brightly, and the creature recoiled further, its form flickering like a dying flame.
"It's weakening!" Ray yelled, firing another shot.
Kai turned back to the altar, his mind racing. The symbols seemed to pulse faintly, as if reacting to the Harbinger's presence. He grabbed his knife and began scratching at one of the marks, hoping to disrupt its pattern.
The moment his blade touched the symbol, the air around them seemed to shift. A low hum filled the clearing, and the Harbinger let out a piercing shriek.
"It's working!" Kai shouted, his voice barely audible over the noise.
Ray kept his flashlight trained on the creature, his other hand gripping his gun. "Hurry up, Kai! I don't know how long we can hold it off!"
Kai continued to carve into the symbol, his hands steady despite the chaos around him. The hum grew louder, and the ground beneath them began to tremble.
With one final stroke, the symbol shattered, a burst of light erupting from the altar. The Harbinger let out one last, agonized roar before vanishing into the shadows, its glowing eyes fading into the darkness.
Kai collapsed to his knees, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Ray rushed to his side, his face pale but determined.
"You did it," Ray said, helping him to his feet.
Kai shook his head, his expression grim. "Not yet. That was just one mark. We still have a long way to go."
As the two men stared at the altar, now cracked and broken, a chilling realization set in: the fight was far from over.
