The hug

Aria's POV

I gasped as the memory of Jonathan faded, replaced by an overwhelming warmth that coursed through my body. Strong arms lifted me, and I instinctively knew it was Kaine. His familiar scent enveloped me as he carried me to what I assumed was my bedroom.

"Aria, relax. You're okay," Sage's anxious voice floated nearby.

As the heat receded, I felt Davina stirring within me. My inner wolf's presence was comforting, but worry gnawed at me. If Kaine had used his magic to help me again, then once more, he must be in pain.

After a few moments, I found the strength to open my eyes. Sure enough, I was in my room, lying on my bed. The sharp tang of blood hit my nostrils.

"Hey," I said softly, smiling at Sage to ease her obvious concern. My gaze shifted to Kaine, who sat rigidly on the sofa across the room. Even from here, I could sense how drained he was.

"What happened?" I asked, my voice raspy.
