Kaine's Pov

The alley was dark, the scent trail vanishing into shadows. I clenched my jaw, frustration simmering beneath the surface. Ed and I had been so close to catching our prey, only to have him slip through our fingers like smoke.

"Impossible," I growled, scanning the narrow passage. "No one evades us this easily."

Ed's brow furrowed as he sniffed the air. "It's as if he just... disappeared, Kaine. I don't like this. There is some magic involved in this."

I nodded curtly. "Agreed. Something is not right here. We should shift, see if our wolf senses can pick up anything we're missing."

But even as I prepared to let my inner beast take over, a nagging doubt held me back. If our human noses couldn't detect a trace, what chance did our wolves have? Still, we had to try.

I closed my eyes, reaching for that primal energy coiled within me. The shift began, bones elongating, muscles rippling—

"Wait," Ed hissed suddenly. "Someone's coming."
