Aria's pov
"Certain elder witches prefer a Luna they can control easily, someone to whom they can bestow their magic," Kaine went on. "You... make things more complicated."
The letter trembled in my hands as I read it for the third time, my heart sinking with each word. The other nine finalists had formally protested to the werewolf council about my "unfair advantage" in the competition to become King Kaine's wife and Luna.
I let out a shaky breath, trying to calm my nerves. They weren't wrong - I did see Kaine more often than the others since I studied at his school. But it's not like I had planned this!
A soft knock at my door made me jump. "Come in," I called out, hastily folding the letter and shoving it in my desk drawer.
Kaine's imposing figure filled the doorway, his dark hair slightly disheveled. My breath caught as our eyes met. Even after everything, he still had that effect on me.
