The aftermath

Aria's POV

Morning light filtered through unfamiliar curtains, casting pale shadows across Sage's spare bedroom. I had barely slept, drifting in and out of consciousness as the previous day's events replayed endlessly in my mind. My eyes felt raw from crying, and a hollow ache had settled in my chest where determination once lived.

The quiet apartment amplified my thoughts. Sage had left at dawn, squeezing my hand before heading to assess the aftermath in Gateport. "I'll bring you a new phone," she'd promised, her voice gentle but not pressing me about my decision to leave the academy. I was grateful for that small mercy.

I pulled Sage's borrowed blanket tighter around my shoulders, staring at the ceiling. The weight of yesterday pressed down on me like a physical thing. Tom's face kept appearing in my mind – his trust in me, how he'd followed me into danger without question. I had put my best friend at risk. I had put everyone at risk.
