The embers of the previous night's celebration still glowed faintly in the fire pits as the soldiers of Valdris stirred awake. The air was crisp with the scent of damp earth, and the morning sun stretched across the training grounds, revealing weary but determined faces. Today marked the true beginning of Kael's leadership—not just as a warrior, but as a commander.
Kael stood before his assembled divisions, his eyes scanning over the soldiers. The camaraderie built from their grueling training was evident, but discipline was equally important. They were no longer simply an army—they were the foundation of something far greater.
"Rest is over," Kael called out, his voice sharp and clear. "The Vorath will not wait for us to be ready. From today forward, our training will be as real as war itself. Each of you must understand that survival is not an individual effort—it is a bond formed through blood and steel. And to forge that bond further, we will conduct a full-scale battle simulation."
Murmurs rippled through the ranks. A few soldiers exchanged glances, while others tightened their grips on their weapons in anticipation.
Thane smirked, stepping forward. "A mock battle? Now this is my kind of morning."
Lyria crossed her arms, her gaze sharp. "Are we to assume this will be a free-for-all, or do you have something more structured in mind?"
Kael's lips curled into a knowing smile. "It will be a test of both strength and strategy. This will not be fought as individuals but as divisions. Each group will be assigned specific objectives, and the one that best executes their role will claim victory. This is no longer just training—this is war in all but name."
The training grounds were transformed into a battlefield. Natural terrain was utilized, creating strategic choke points and defensive positions. Wooden markers represented supply lines, and several areas were designated as critical objectives.
Kael divided the army into two forces:
Team A, led by Kael, with the Guardians as the defensive core, the Vanguard as the main assault force, and a handful of Seekers for reconnaissance.
Team B, led by Lyria, focusing on Seekers for ambush tactics, Ingenious for strategy, and a well-balanced Vanguard to capitalize on their openings.
Darran, overseeing the exercise as a neutral observer, signaled the start with the ringing of a bell.
"Battle begins—NOW!"
Kael had chosen a defensive approach, positioning the Guardians in tight formations around their objectives. The Seekers moved ahead, scouting the enemy's movements. The Vanguard, led by Thane, stood in reserve, prepared to counterattack when the time was right.
"Remember," Kael instructed his soldiers, "our strength is in holding firm. We bait them into attacking, then crush them when they overextend."
Within moments, a scout sprinted back from the treeline, breathless. "Commander! Lyria's forces are flanking from the south! A group of Seekers is already moving behind us!"
Kael smirked. "Good. Let them come."
Lyria, true to her nature, had chosen a guerrilla-style approach. The Seekers had been deployed to harass the enemy's supply points, cutting them off before they could mount a prolonged defense.
From the shadows, Lyria whispered to her scouts. "Kael expects a frontal assault. We give him what he wants while dismantling his position from the edges. Stay silent. Stay unseen."
A dozen Seekers moved swiftly through the underbrush, slipping past the perimeter unnoticed. Their mission: disable the Guardians' defenses before the main attack.
Thane, standing at the forefront, rolled his shoulders as the first wave of the enemy came into view. "Here they come."
Kael nodded. "Hold formation. The moment they hit, Vanguard—break them."
Lyria's forces surged forward, their Vanguard clashing against the shield wall of the Guardians. The sound of metal striking metal filled the air as soldiers locked in combat, neither side yielding.
A Guardian soldier struggled against an opposing fighter, his shield rattling under the repeated blows. "Hold steady!" Kael called, his presence reinforcing their morale.
Then, just as planned, the Seekers struck from behind.
A Guardian suddenly crumpled as a Seeker's training dagger tapped his back—an indication of a successful stealth kill in this exercise. One after another, Guardians were eliminated before they even realized what had happened.
Kael's eyes narrowed. "Lyria... clever."
But he was ready.
"Vanguard! NOW!"
Thane roared, leading his troops into a vicious counterattack. The sheer power of the charge shattered the enemy's front line, forcing Lyria's forces into a retreat.
The battle raged on, neither side gaining a decisive advantage. Kael's disciplined formations and counterattacks clashed against Lyria's cunning strategies and surgical strikes.
Lyria, breathing heavily, wiped sweat from her brow. "Kael's defenses are too strong. If we don't break through now, we'll be worn down."
One of her strategists spoke up. "We still have an advantage—our Seekers are still active. If we hit their command structure directly, we can win."
Lyria exhaled sharply. "Then we strike Kael himself."
As the battle drew to a close, Kael stood near the rear, overseeing the engagement. He had kept his focus on the bigger picture—until he suddenly felt the presence of multiple figures closing in.
Seekers.
Before he could react, three shadows lunged at him. Kael barely dodged, their training daggers grazing his armor. He spun, countering with swift strikes, but these were Lyria's best scouts.
Kael smirked. "She really doesn't hold back, does she?"
More Seekers closed in. Kael's focus sharpened. He anticipated each movement, deflecting every strike. It was an intricate dance—one against many. But Kael knew that if he was taken out, morale would crumble.
Summoning every ounce of skill, Kael countered in rapid succession. One Seeker fell back, another missed his mark—until finally, Kael struck the last opponent squarely in the chest with a dulled training blade.
"Target eliminated!" the observer called.
The battlefield fell silent.
Lyria, from her position, sighed. "That was our best shot."
Darran raised a hand. "The exercise is over! Victory goes to Kael's forces!"
A cheer erupted from Kael's troops.
Kael walked toward Lyria, offering a hand. She took it with a small smirk. "You fight like a monster. But next time, I'll win."
Kael chuckled. "I'll be waiting."
As the soldiers returned to camp, Kael addressed them one last time.
"Today was a battle not for land or victory, but for understanding. We must know our own strengths and weaknesses before we face the true enemy. And make no mistake—this was only the beginning."
Thane laughed. "Well, if our real fights are half as tough as that, I might actually break a sweat."
Kael smirked. "Then we train harder."
The soldiers dispersed, and Kael looked out over the horizon. The battle with the Vorath was coming. They had taken the first steps toward unity.
Now, they had to prepare for war.
