The Elorin family library was vast but underutilized. It was filled with old tomes, many of which Alessa hadn't touched in her previous life. Now, she combed through them with purpose.
Theo found her there hours later, sitting on the floor with books stacked around her.
"Alessa? Are you reading history books?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Why does that surprise you?" she replied without looking up.
"You hate history," he pointed out. "You said it's boring."
Alessa smiled faintly. "I've changed my mind."
Theo flopped down beside her, curiosity lighting up his face. "What are you looking for?"
"Information about saintesses," she admitted. "About their powers, their duties… everything."
Theo tilted his head. "Why? You're already chosen, aren't you? What's there to know?"
"That's what I want to find out," she said cryptically.
He shrugged and picked up a book to flip through. Though Theo was only twelve, he was sharp and resourceful—a trait she hadn't appreciated enough in her previous life. If nurtured correctly, he could become one of her greatest allies.
Hours later, Alessa found what she had been searching for—a dusty tome titled The Forgotten Truths of the Saintess. Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
The book described powers she hadn't known about: the ability to see fragments of the future, to purify cursed objects, and to create barriers impenetrable by both magic and steel. These were skills she hadn't possessed before—or perhaps ones she had never been taught.
She ran her fingers over the text, her heart pounding. If she could master these abilities, no one could challenge her claim as the saintess.
But one passage made her blood run cold: The saintess's power comes at a cost. Those who wield it recklessly will face divine judgment.
"What does that mean?" Theo asked, peering over her shoulder.
Alessa snapped the book shut. "It means I have to be careful."
But in her heart, she knew that her greatest challenge wouldn't be her enemies or the court—it would be herself.
