Eldric finally arrived at the large gate that stood firmly before him. The gate was made of thick wood with beautiful carvings that looked old but well-maintained. On either side, towers towered high, each guarded by fully armed soldiers holding long spears.
A crowd of people had gathered in front of the gate, patiently waiting in line. There were merchants carrying carts full of goods, tired travelers with large backpacks, and even small families with children holding their parents' hands tightly. The noisy sounds of chatter, the creaking of cart wheels, and footsteps made this place feel alive.
Eldric joined the line, his eyes scanning the surroundings. Every now and then, the guards at the gate checked the documents of the visitors or checked the contents of their luggage. Those who were allowed to enter looked relieved, while some others looked disappointed when asked to wait or provide additional information.
However, Eldric suddenly felt something strange. His head suddenly felt heavy, and a sharp throbbing spread from his temples. He touched his head, trying to suppress the sudden pain. His vision blurred for a moment, and the sounds around him became indistinct.
In the chaos, a strange voice sounded in his mind. Words he didn't recognize, yet somehow felt familiar. The language, which seemed to be embedded directly in his mind, began to make sense. Eldric tried to process what was happening, and slowly, the pain in his head began to subside. A cold sensation spread, replacing the dizziness that had previously paralyzed him.
He took a deep breath, whispering to himself in amazement, "What is this? This language... it's as if I've known it all my life." He realized that the words were from an ancient language called Aethrelian, a language that seemed to have originated from Elythra, the world he was currently on.
Eldric looked up, feeling calmer now. This strange new knowledge gave him a little confidence. He stepped forward, getting closer to his turn to be checked at the gate, with his mind full of questions about what had just happened.
"This world is full of mysteries," looking at the guards who were now increasingly clear in his view.
As the line moved forward, Eldric felt the gaze of the guards watching his every move. He tried to stay calm, even though his mind was filled with questions. "Will they let me in? Or will they suspect me?" he muttered to himself.
When it was his turn, a sturdy guard with a thick beard approached. His face was serious, but not hostile.
"Your name and purpose?" asked the guard in a firm voice.
Eldric stood up straight, trying to look confident. "My name is Eldric. I am a traveler. I am looking for a place to rest and maybe a job," he replied.
The guard nodded, examining Eldric from head to toe. "We do not allow strangers to enter without a record. If you wish to enter, register yourself at the city hall. Understand?" he said as he jotted something down on the ledger in his hand.
Eldric nodded obediently. "Sure, I'll follow the rules."
After a few moments of simple inspection, the guard allowed him to pass. Eldric stepped through the gate, his eyes awestruck by the new world that lay within. Bustling streets, the tempting aroma of food, and the warm city life greeted him.
Eldric saw the bustling city, a far cry from the desolate and wild atmosphere he had just left behind. The cobblestone streets were filled with people walking back and forth, most of whom seemed busy with their own business. On the sides of the streets, vendors shouted out their wares: fresh fruit neatly arranged in woven baskets, cuts of meat hanging from metal hooks, gleaming metal tools, elixirs in colorful glass bottles, and various other items he did not even recognize.
He was surprised to see this diversity, feeling as if he had stepped into another world. However, his mind drifted back to the vision he had received when he received the power of understanding from the dark blue ball. The vision depicted a civilization far more advanced than the one in front of him now. He saw a magnificent city with towering towers, sparkling with magical light flowing through crystal channels.
Advanced equipment powered by magical energy seemed to be used easily by its inhabitants, wheelless carriages floating in the air, communication devices in the form of small glowing balls, and even buildings that could change shape according to the needs of their inhabitants. Every corner of the city felt alive, filled with an aura of power and technology that integrated harmoniously.
However, such a magnificent sight was very different from the reality in front of him now. This city, although lively, showed no signs of progress like in his vision. There was no trace of advanced magical technology, only simple daily activities with ordinary merchandise.
"Could this be a picture of the future?" Eldric wondered to himself, trying to understand this striking difference. Or perhaps, the dark blue ball showed a forgotten past, a golden age that now only remained in a faint shadow.
As Eldric was daydreaming, suddenly a boy approached him. The boy looked about ten years old, with a confident face and slightly shabby but neat clothes. His messy brown hair added to the innocent yet agile impression.
"Sir, this is your first time here, isn't it?" The boy asked with a wide smile, as if he was sure of his answer. Eldric, who was still surprised by this sudden approach, could only nod slowly.
"My name is Theo, I am a guide to this city!" The boy continued enthusiastically. "I know all the best places here—markets, inns, places to eat, even places that not many people know about. If you need help, I can guide you. Of course, for a small fee, hehehe."
Eldric smiled slightly, amused by Theo's confident attitude. "Are you sure I need a guide?" he asked, looking at the boy with interest.
Theo nodded quickly. "Of course! This city is quite large and can be quite confusing for a stranger. Besides, I know the secrets of this city that you can't find on your own."
Eldric nodded slightly with a smile, feeling that accepting this child's help might help him get to know this city faster. As Theo walked excitedly, Eldric followed behind him, observing every corner of the city they passed.
The city was getting busier. Merchants shouted offering their goods: fresh fruits, smoked meats, household goods, and even mysterious elixirs with bright colors that sparkled in the sunlight. The smell of spices mixed with the aroma of baked bread filled the air, tempting Eldric's already full stomach.
Theo enthusiastically continued to point out various interesting places in the city, like a true guide. He pointed out shops that sold goods at cheap prices, especially in the morning when local farmers brought their fresh produce straight from the fields.
"If you need fresh fruits or vegetables, just come here early in the morning. They usually sell at a cheaper price than the main market," Theo said, pointing to a row of small stalls.
Along the way, Theo also warned Eldric about some cunning merchants. "Be careful of those who are too friendly and offer big discounts. It's usually a trap. But there are also kind merchants, like Mr. Garon, the meat seller at the end of the market. He's honest and often gives extras for free if you're a regular customer."
They passed a fairly crowded bar, and Theo explained, "That's where people gather after sunset. If you want to hear interesting stories or rumors, that's the place. But be careful, there are sometimes fights there."
Then, Theo led Eldric to the main square, where the City Hall stood majestically. The building is different from most other buildings in the humble town of Grenholde. The town hall has a striking design with its solid gray stone walls, but the truly captivating elements are the wooden carvings that adorn each of its doors, windows, and pillars on the front.
The wood carvings were intricate and beautiful, featuring lifelike leaf and flower motifs, with details that showed the craftsmanship of the local craftsmen. Above the main door, there was the city's coat of arms, an eagle flapping its wings, flanked by two oak trees, symbolizing Grenholde's strength and resilience as a frontier town.
As they stepped inside, Eldric found the interior of the Town Hall no less impressive. The ceilings were high with polished wooden beams, while the tables and chairs were made of solid mahogany. In the corner of the room, there was a large bulletin board with various notices, ranging from town news to job listings.
Theo pointed to the registration desk on the right side of the room. "That's where the identity registration is, sir. Newcomers are usually asked to register here. Also, if you need official documents to stay in Grenholde or permission to leave the city, this is also the place."
Eldric approached the registration desk. Behind the desk, a middle-aged officer in a dark blue uniform smiled pleasantly. "Welcome to Grenholde. Would you like to register as a resident or just a visitor?" he asked.
Eldric replied calmly, "Just as a visitor for now."
The officer nodded and took a form from the stack on the table. "Please fill this out. We only need your name, purpose of visit, and how long you plan to stay. If you need permission to travel outside the city, let us know, as we will add a protective mark to your travel."
As he filled out the form, Eldric felt that Grenholde was a well-organized place, despite it being a small town on the border. After submitting the form, he received a small card with the city seal, a sign that he had been registered as an official visitor. "Thank you," he said as he put the card in his pocket.
Theo, who was waiting by the door, smiled broadly. "See? I told you to stop by the City Hall. What do you think, it's good, right?"
Eldric nodded. "Very good. This city is more organized than I imagined."
Theo nodded in agreement. "Well, even though it's on the border, Grenholde is quite advanced. But still be careful, sir. The monsters out there won't care about your identity."
Eldric smiled faintly, feeling that Grenholde had more to learn. "Thank you, Theo. You are truly a helpful guide."
Theo smiled broadly at Eldric's flattery. "Ah, sir, you are too kind. I was only trying my best to help," he said proudly.
"But you don't know the half of this town! Grenholde may be small, but it is full of adventures, interesting stories, and incredible places!"
As he walked out of the Town Hall, Theo began to tell more about the town and its surroundings. "Near the market, there is an adventurer's guild. It's where people sign up to take on quests or find traveling companions. Those who join the guild are usually true adventurers, mages, fighters, healers, protectors, and even assassins. Everyone has an important role in a party. Mages use magic to attack or support, fighters are on the front lines to fight enemies, healers heal, protectors ensure the safety of the team, and assassins... well, they are experts in quick movements and deadly attacks."
Theo glanced at the sword hanging from Eldric's back. "You carry a sword, so I guess you're a fighter, huh? Or maybe something more?"
Eldric smiled faintly, not giving a direct answer. He enjoyed Theo's seemingly endless enthusiasm.
Theo continued, "If you want to form a party, make sure you choose members you can trust. Don't just look at their strength, but also their character. There are many stories of parties failing because members betrayed each other or were too selfish. But if you prefer to work alone, you also have to be very careful, especially if you decide to explore dungeons outside of town."
Theo then began to tell about the dungeons around Grenholde. "Some are small and fairly easy dungeons, but some are very dangerous. They say there's an old dungeon to the west that hasn't been explored for a long time. The treasures must be extraordinary, but many people haven't returned from there. Some are said to be inhabited by strange monsters that even wizards have a hard time fighting."
Eldric listened attentively, sensing that Theo truly understood the city and the world around it.
"So, Sir Eldric," Theo said, slowing his pace. "If you want to explore dungeons or accept guild missions, I suggest you think it through carefully. Many people end up in bad situations because they are too reckless."
Eldric nodded. "You know a lot for your age, Theo. You might make a great adventurer someday."
Theo chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh, I would rather stay in this city and be a guide. The world out there is too dangerous for me. But you, sir, seem to be able to face any danger. I can only wish you the best."
Eldric smiled slightly, sensing the sincerity in Theo's words. He was beginning to understand that Grenholde, though peaceful on the surface, held challenges that only those willing to take great risks could face.
Theo glanced at Eldric enthusiastically after they had walked for a while. "Mr. Eldric, is there anything else you would like to know? I know a lot about this city, maybe I can help."
Eldric looked at Theo for a moment, thinking. "Is there a library in this city? And, about the guild you mentioned earlier, I would like to know more. For example, what about the fighter class levels there?"
Theo smiled broadly, happy to be of help. "Ah, the library! There is one, not far from the guild. It's a good place to look for information, especially if you are interested in history or legends. However, you need to register to enter. The fee is not expensive, only a few coins."
Then, Theo continued, "About the guild, they divide adventurers into several classes based on their abilities and achievements. The classes start from E, the most basic. Usually it's for people who have just registered or take small missions such as delivering goods or hunting small animals. Class D is a little better, they handle tasks such as chasing away goblins or guarding small caravans."
"After that, there's C class, where you start to be considered fairly skilled. They usually handle more difficult missions, like fighting bandits or exploring low-level dungeons. B class is highly respected, often leading groups on big missions. A class are the elite adventurers, and S… well, they're living legends. There are rumors of classes above S, but those are just stories. No one has ever seen anyone in that class."
Eldric nodded, trying to process all this information. "Sounds pretty structured. But what about the security in this city? It seems pretty crowded."
Theo nodded quickly. "You're right. There are guard patrols every night, especially since the last few weeks. There have been a few robberies, and people are starting to feel restless. Luckily, the patrols have helped keep crime down."
Theo then pointed towards the direction near the City Hall they had just left. "Oh, I almost forgot! Near the City Hall, there's a building where you can learn basic fighting skills. You can learn sword techniques, archery, or even basic magic there. It's not free though, and it's quite expensive. Many people can't afford it, so they either teach themselves or join a guild to get training."
Eldric looked in the direction Theo was pointing. "Thank you, Theo. Your information is very useful. You are truly an excellent guide." Theo smiled broadly, proud of the compliment. "Of course, Mr. Eldric. If there is anything else you need, please do not hesitate to ask. I am happy to help."
Theo led Eldric through the city streets until they arrived in front of a simple but cozy-looking building, with a large wooden sign that read "Grenholde Wind Inn". The building was decorated with simple carvings around the entrance, giving off a warm and welcoming feel.
Theo pointed towards the door. "This is the place, Mister Eldric. The owner is very kind, and the food is famously delicious. The prices won't break the bank either."
Eldric nodded with a smile. "You are indeed a good guide, Theo."
As they entered, the sound of noisy conversation could be heard from several people eating in the main hall. The aroma of warm food filled the air, making Eldric realize how hungry he was. Suddenly, a small girl with braided hair greeted them cheerfully, "Welcome!"
Theo rubbed his little nose proudly, though his face was a little red. Not long after, a middle-aged woman appeared from behind the reception desk. Her face was adorned with a warm smile, and she immediately recognized Theo.
"Aiyaa... Theo! You brought guests here? You really worked hard, huh!" he said in a friendly tone, his eyes shining with affection.
Theo scratched his head with a small laugh, clearly feeling a little embarrassed but also proud. He stood up a little straighter, trying to look more confident.
The innkeeper patted Theo's shoulder gently. "You can wait a moment, Theo. If you want, have something to eat before you go. You must be hungry after walking around the city all day."
Theo could only smile shyly, while Eldric watched their interaction attentively. He then took out some coins and handed them to Theo. "These are for you, Theo. Thank you for helping me today. I might need your help again later."
Theo accepted the coins with sparkling eyes. "Thank you very much, Mr. Eldric! If you need anything, just call me."
Eldric then turned to the innkeeper. "I would like to rent a room for the next three days."
"Of course," the innkeeper replied as he wrote down in a ledger on his desk. "20 coins, Room on the top floor, number three. Dinner will be served in this dining room, if you would like to join."
Eldric nodded, then handed over the coin and took the room key given to him, then walked towards the stairs. After finding his room, he entered and closed the door behind him.
The room was simple but clean, with a sturdy wooden bed, a small table, and a window overlooking the city streets. Eldric flopped onto the bed, feeling a relief he hadn't felt in a long time.
"At least, this is a good start," he muttered before slowly closing his eyes, letting his body rest.
