Lily had just finished arranging her things and drifted into an exhausted nap when the sound of the door creaking open startled her awake. She sat up abruptly, her heart racing, as a tall girl with curly dark hair and a confident air entered the room, dragging a large duffle bag behind her.
"Oh! Sorry if I woke you," the girl said with an easy smile, switching to English as soon as she caught Lily's bewildered expression.
"It's fine," Lily replied, rubbing her eyes. "I must've dozed off."
The girl set her bag down on the opposite bed and studied Lily curiously. "You're new, huh? I'm Sofia, by the way. A third-year here. And, um…" Sofia glanced around the room and then gestured toward the bed Lily had chosen. "This is usually my side, but don't worry, I'll leave it for you."
Lily blinked in surprise. "Wait… your side? Are you my roommate?"
"Sort of." Sofia grinned as she began unzipping her bag and pulling out various items. "I live here during the semester, but I'm hardly ever in the room. I mostly stay with friends or study at their place. Dorm life gets old after a while."
Lily nodded slowly, unsure how to respond. "Oh. Well, I guess it's nice to meet you. I'm Lily. First-year."
"Welcome to the madhouse," Sofia said, tossing a bundle of clothes into the closet. "You're in for an interesting ride."
As she unpacked, Sofia asked Lily a few questions—where she was from, what she was studying, and whether she had explored the campus yet. She was friendly, even charming, but there was an air of casual detachment about her, as though she was already halfway out the door.
After stuffing her belongings haphazardly into the closet, Sofia zipped her duffle bag shut again. "Well, that's it for now," she said, standing up and brushing her hands together. "I've got some stuff to handle off-campus, so I won't be around much. I'll see you next week, though."
Lily blinked. "Wait… you're leaving? Already?"
"Yup," Sofia said breezily, slinging the duffle bag over her shoulder. "Don't worry—you'll get used to it. Everyone finds their own rhythm here. Some of us just… prefer not to stick to dorm life too much."
Before Lily could ask more, Sofia gave a little wave. "Nice meeting you, Lily. Good luck with the first week!"
And just like that, she was gone, leaving the door swinging shut behind her.
Lily sat on her bed, staring at the empty space Sofia had left behind. Her mind raced with questions. Was this normal? Did students just come and go like that? Was Sofia serious about only showing up next week?
The silence of the room felt almost oppressive after Sofia's whirlwind energy. Lily couldn't help but feel slightly unnerved. This was her first glimpse into university life, and it was already far from what she had expected.
